Hearts in Hawai'i
Our Trip To Hawai'i (2002)--Final Thoughts
3/27/2002
After 16 days and 17 nights in Hawai`i, you would think that we were ready to go home. Well, we were. I never thought I'd find myself saying this, but when the final morning arrived and we had to pack up, return the car to Kahului and endure a 20-hour trip back to Duluth, we were ready to go. We just wanted to get back home.
In contrast to the flight to Hawai`i, which "featured" a five-hour layover in the Twin Cities, we had a three-hour layover in Honolulu. I don't know which place you would prefer to be stuck in, but it was an obvious choice for me! We spent our time in Honolulu sitting in the outside garden, watching fish and smoking cigarettes.
The problem with being on a red-eye flight in the "cattle car" which is what Northwest calls the coach section is that you simply cannot sleep. At least I couldn't. There was no way you could tilt your seat far enough back without causing discomfort to whomever was behind you. Even with sitting next to the window and leaning sideways, there was no sleep to be had. So, essentially, we were awake for 24 straight hours. Not fun.
Was it worth it? Absolutely. I'd do this every year if money permitted. We've spent 17 days in Maui on these two Hawai`i trips and still there are things which we haven't done yet. We haven't snorkeled Molokini. Haven't biked down Haleakala. There are some top-notch restaurants we still haven't enjoyed.
Will we return to Maui in the future? Probably not. We've never been to the Big Island or Kauai. Rest assured that someday, we will be back to Hawai`i.
