Our Caribbean Cruise (2006)--Day 3
4/24/2006
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Heading into San Juan, Puerto Rico, rain was in the forecast but the forecast was dead wrong as we had a nearly perfect weather day. Got my first sunburn of the year on my over-exposed forehead. Patty went to the Fitness Center while I tanned—by the time she made it to the sunning deck, it was getting full of folks and all the nearby chairs were claimed. So I let her have mine while I walked six miles (24 laps) on the walking track.
Land spotted! We didn’t realize we were this close to land but suddenly here was San Juan—got our cameras and tour tickets and found the forward tenders. There was a good line already in place. Finally we were allowed to get off the ship & the gathering place for our Old San Juan City tour was easy to find. The driver spoke perfect English—this was nice as we wound our way in an air-conditioned van through New San Juan, eventually arriving at Fort San Cristobal, an amazing fortification built centuries ago. This was our best photo opportunity yet, and we were there for half an hour. The driver then left us off in a shopping district in Old San Juan with instructions on the short walk back to the ship.
Patty and I both bought t-shirts—mine was too small so she’ll be wearing it!
Back on the ship, we chowed down early at the Seaview (I had the Cuban sandwich which was okay and onion rings which were pretty tasty) and then headed back to the room, watching our post-sundown departure from San Juan.
