Our Trip to Hawai'i (2007)--Day 12

Exploring On Our Own
The alarm woke me up at 5:15?! Geez, I thought this was a vacation. After a quick shower we headed down to the Kama'aina Terrace for our free breakfast buffet, which was very good. After breakfast, we hit the road for a long drive to North Kohala and the Pololu Valley lookout. There are incredible views of sheer cliffs and a gorgeous, green valley to be appreciated here.

Hawaiian Style Cafe
After visiting Polulu Valley, we cruised to Waimea and found the Hawaiian Style Cafe. If you've ever watched the show Girls Meets Hawaii, one of the episodes ("Taste of Hawaii") features Samantha Brown visiting this restaurant and ordering two huge plate lunches, including a Loco Moco. I immediately recognized Kim from that episode; she served us and we chatted about that episode. She told us people usually mentioned it for awhile after the Travel Channel replayed that episode, which seems to happen a few times each year. They had an interesting selection of plate lunches (including the famous Loco Moco), but we got "safe" with our choices--I ordered pancakes and meat (in my case, I chose bacon), consisting of three huge pancakes and a very generous amount of bacon. I managed to eat nearly all of it. Patty ordered a cheeseburger and fries which she said afterward were great. Total was only $16.91, an outstanding deal for the amount of food we got. While waiting for our food to arrive, we had a brief conversation with some locals sitting at the next table. By the way, it appeared we're the only tourists in the place, and we really like this. Sitting at a dining place where locals go, you usually won't go wrong...plus you will nearly always find some pretty pleasant people to talk to. Anyway, one of them opined "their portions will challenge you". No kidding! It was clear to us by the time we paid our lunch bill why this restaurant is so popular.
It was sunny the entire time we were on the Kohala Coast and in Waimea but as soon as we headed south towards Kona, we could see clouds ahead. Sure enough, by the time we got back to the hotel, we were faced with the same gloomy conditions as we faced yesterday. But at least it was warm and not raining!
No dinner tonight after the huge lunch we had; instead we visited the Verandah Lounge where I enjoyed a Virgin Lava Flow--very tasty! TV and asleep by 11:00.
