Our Trip to Hawai'i (2007)--Day 16
5/8/2007
Final day on the Big Island
After breakfast I returned to Kona, taking advantage of the sunny morning to take more pictures with the D50. It was warm and a little muggy, shaping up to be another great day. I plunked $30 into the gas tank; gas is over $3.50/gallon here! Supposedly it's even pricier in Maui, our next destination. I got back in time to soak up some serious sun before the clouds rolled in once again.
Overall, we're not sold on a return to this island. Kona has been a lot of fun and the hotel we've been staying at is absolutely top-notch, but the climate has been far from ideal (despite what others have told us about this not being normal weather); also, there are major distances to drive if you want to visit other sections of the island such as North Kohala, Volcano and Hilo. It's pretty unlikely we'll return here on our next trip. Will we revisit the Big Island in the future? Probably. Patty seems to view this as I do.
I'm having thoughts of leaving and heading back to Duluth, as we "only" have a week to go. Trying to combat those thoughts by staying in the moment and relishing every little bit of this amazing experience.

Killer Tacos
After some discussion and reading of Big Island Revealed, we drove to Kona to find Killer Tacos in an out-of-the-way area. Only $6.99 for fantastic Taco Salads! Crisp lettuce, great salsa topping, yummy ground beef. The only improvement I could recommend would be to spice up the beef just a little. This was a super buy, ranking up there with Hawaiian Style Cafe in terms of cost/quality. No atmosphere; great food! Another easy recommendation to make.
No stop at the Verandah Lounge tonight--one final set of sunset pictures and then back in the room after a long walk on Ali`i Drive.
