Hearts in Hawai'i

Kimo Says Hello To Proctor!
8/5/2012

After some discussion regarding whether Harold fit into what we wanted for a family dog (which didn't take long!), we made the decision to welcome him into our home. The following Saturday, we made the drive back into Ashland along with the few items we'd need to get Harold back to Duluth; two collars, a leash, a water dish so he could drink while at the rest stop on our way back.

We had also discussed his name. Harold just didn't fit. Having tossed a few suggestions back and forth, we decided on Kimo (Hawaiian for "James"). It seemed to fit and had that added Hawaiian connection for us. A few people were perplexed on why we would name a dog after a cancer treatment, requiring us to inform them that it wasn't Chemo, it was Kimo! Just pronounced the same.

Having arrived at Chequamegon Human Association, we paid the fee, signed some forms (basically saying we would take care of him, would commit to bringing him to a vet, things of that nature), and then took Harold/Kimo for his last walk on their trails to settle him down a bit. Patty got in the back seat and called him in. He went right into the back seat with her. So far, so good.

He actually took to riding in our car fairly well. After a period of some nervous panting, he settled down after Patty gave him a Kong toy with peanut butter spread inside. This kept him happily occupied for an extended period of time. We were soon back in Proctor.

After getting him out of the car, we took him on a quick tour of the outside area where he would be "doing his business".  He immediately took the cue and did some business.  On a massive scale   You would think he hadn't relieved himself in a week!  Just nervousness on his part, as it turned out.

He took to his kennel that first night fairly well.  He certainly wanted to be outside the kennel, but when it was time to bed down, he went in there and laid down.  It took a little coaxing, of course, aided by tasty dog treats.

So, we're home and he's in his new home.  By my count, he was been in four different environments in his short eight-month life.  We're hopeful that this home will be his last.
