Our Trip to Maui (2014)--Day 3
5/7/2014
By body still felt like it was on Duluth time, as I arose before 4:00 this morning! Clouds dominated the morning skies--after showering and eating breakfast, we walked about three miles on the beach, stopping to chat with a couple residents we recognize from previous trips. One of them owns two dogs, Moki (sp?) and Maisy (sp?). Moki is barking and acting a little pissed off this morning, perhaps due to the number of dogs also on the beach. She must think it's her personal beach!
We forgot to get a couple things on our grocery quest yesterday, requiring another stop at Safeway--after that, I hit the sun for about an hour. It was hot but not nearly as muggy as yesterday. There was also a little vog (volcanic fog, caused by southeast winds blowing from the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island). We've seen much worse in the past, to the point where Lanai was totally obscured. We're hoping the trade winds return soon, but the forecast isn't very optimistic on that front.
After calling Valley Isle Excursions and getting final instructions for next Monday's tour, I called Kula Lavender Farms to check on the availability of a cart tour on their property. They were booked solid the rest of the week, so we booked a tour for Thursday of next week. This means we'll be doing four paid activities next week. Besides the afore-mentioned, we'll be taking a hiking tour on Haleakala on Wednesday and a cocktail cruise on the Paragon on Friday. It'll be a fun week!
Tonight's dinner destination was the Lahaina Pizza Company on Front Street.
Nice view from the table.
Spaghetti. Quite forgettable.
Sausage & pepperoni pizza. Decent but only in the context of the spaghetti.
Have you ever been to a place which you really wanted to like because the staff is so friendly and the atmosphere so nice? Say hello to Lahaina Pizza Company. This used to be part of the BJ's Chicago Pizzeria chain which, in my opinion, served the best deep dish pizza on Maui. Maybe the best pizza, period. Since breaking off on their own, the atmosphere remained excellent with breezy views of the ocean from the upper side of Front Street, the same excellent service, but the quality of their offerings had dropped off significantly. The toppings are more sparse and bordering on tasteless, as is the tomato sauce. The crust still has that tasty crunch. Forget the spaghetti--I'd almost prefer it straight from the can. But people still come here because, being located on Front Street, it's convenient. I don't know if they have any motivation to improve.
Back at the hotel and the hot tube! This has always been our favorite nighttime place to gather with other visitors and chat. Tonight's guests included a family of four from Phoenix.
Bed time by 9 p.m.
