Hearts in Hawai'i
Our Trip to Maui (2014)--Day 11
5/15/2014
Following the disappointment of yesterday's Haleakala hike, we're hopeful that today's tour at the Ali`i Kula Lavender Farm would be far more productive. It was not.
We had reservations for the Cart Tour at 2:00--as we drove up the Haleakala highway and then the Kula Highway, we encountered some showers, one or two of them fairly heavy. Our apprehension and fears that this would be another washout or fogout were realized once we reached the Lavender Farm. On this day, it would be both a washout and a fogout. Five minutes before the tour started, they announced it had been canceled. So we got our money back and left.
The preceding four pics were shot at the Lavender Farm from the porch area in back of the gift shop
If you're in the area and just want to stop by, they do have quite the impressive little gift shop. Most everything they sell there is oriented to lavender--soap, shampoo, herb tea, scones, peppermint jam, oils, candles. We brought back some soap for some co-workers. So it's worth a stop if you are already upcountry. Is it worth the drive from west Maui? Only if you have a tour planned.
We bounced dinner ideas back and forth and decided to give Kula Bistro a try. In this case, the Trip Advisor rating (#1 of 14 restaurants in Kula) was more than justified.
Inside decor was pleasing
But no views of the outside world
On the other hand, with food like this, it doesn't matter what your view is. This is Patty's Kula Bistro House Salad
Likewise, my Chicken Parmesan was outstanding! Huge portion, too. Half of it went home and became tomorrow's lunch.
Cheesecake for dessert!
Afterward, we drove back to Lahaina and discovered a rare event--rain! Let's be clear on this point; rain in Hawai`i is nothing like rain in Minnesota. Most rain in the Gopher State is miserable and cold. In Hawai`i, it's refreshing at times. On those 85 degree days, it can be a welcome relief. We went for a walk in the rain down to Bubba Gump's and back.
Tonight the hot tub was calling, and I fell in conversation with three people from San Diego. I also had the chance to chat briefly with Fred Mayo, the general manager of Classic Resorts, who runs the Lahaina Shores. After that, it was off to bed.
