Our Trip to Maui (2014)--Day 13
5/17/2014
Today got off to a nice start, as does nearly every day here on Maui! After breakfast and sitting on the lanai enjoying my morning cup of coffee, we headed out for a drive up along the northwest coast of Maui. I had figured that, with the winds shifting to the south/southeast and lightening up a bit, the normally cloudy and rainy conditions due to trade winds would be lessened. I was right. We drove up to the Bellstone Pools (Olivine Pools to some), close enough to get a decent picture of Kahakuloa Head, and then retraced our drive, pulling over each time an interesting vista presented itself. There were many such views!

The road to (almost) nowhere. Actually, after braving a longish one-lane section, you come upon Kahakuloa town, home of Julie's Best Banana Bread. I don't know if it's the best on Maui, but I have found none better so far!

Honokohau Bay
Honolua Bay. Sadly, less than two hours after we passed by, a gentleman died of a heart attack while snorkeling this bay.

Dollie's Pizza in Kahana was our lunch stop. We didn't dine in, opting for a takeout pizza instead. Pricewise, it wasn't bad--$26 for a two-topping 14" pizza. It was far better than Lahaina Pizza Company, and fed us for the next two lunches.
For lunch, a take-out pizza from Dollie's in Kahana. The best pizza we had! Until we found better later in the trip.
For dinner, we drove up to the Westin Ka`anapali Ocean Villas where we had reservations at Pulehu. This is a slightly upscale, primarily Italian restaurant which overlooks a koi pond. If you eat here, make sure you reserve a table near the pond!
Service here is extremely efficient, but what made our dinner even more pleasurable (aside from the food, which was excellent!) was the couple seated at the adjacent table. We spoke with them for the better part of the hour (in between bites of some of the best food we've had on Maui), and it was one of the more appreciated talks we had during our trip.
As for the food, the Duo of Bruschetta was the best bruschetta we'd ever had (until we dined at Honu Seafood & Pizza later in the trip). The Spaghettini and Meatballs, equally so--the spaghetti and meatballs we had at Bistro Casanova was pretty good, and possibly a better value due to it being cheaper, but based solely on quality, Pulehu wins out. The Insalata Caesar was also wonderful--once those two anchovies they placed on top were pushed aside.
If there was a downside to this meal, it was that it was outright hot! Until the sun settled in behind one of the buildings of this huge, sprawling complex, that is.
At over $100 including tip, this was our most expensive meal of the trip. Not quite the best, but we wouldn't hesitate to return here.

Tomato and Mushroom Bruschetta. What an outstanding starter!
The Spaghettini and Meatballs we enjoyed there were likewise excellent.
