Hearts in Hawai'i

Our Trip To Maui (2016)--Prologue
5/11/2016

This would be our tenth trip to Hawai`i. Planning started in April 2015 when we booked our room at the Lahaina Shores Beach Resort. We needed to book the room this early in order to get the dates we wanted for our favorite room at our favorite hotel. Since we were repeat customers with Chase N Rainbows, we were entitled to a 10% discount, bringing our room cost down to only $139.50/night. Wow! This is extremely cheap for what we got, which included being able to fall asleep at night listening to the ocean and waking up to that wonderful view of the Pacific and the offshore island of Lanai.

Lahaina Shores had been closed for several months in mid-to-late 2015 due to a complete plumbing renovation. At the same time, the owners of the room we had stayed in during our 2014 trip decided to upgrade the room, replacing old carpeting with new tile floors, installing a new walk-in shower, and basically replacing everything in the room with new furniture and applicances--not to mention a new king-sized bed. Very nice! But at the same time, the rate charged for this room more than doubled. Not for us, however; since we had reserved the room prior to the renovation, we were locked in at the pre-renovation rate. What an incredible stroke of luck!

We had always flown Delta (Northwest prior to the Northwest-Delta merger), but this time we decided to take a chance on United Airlines. For over two months, I obsessively followed out the rates for Delta, United and American Airlines. When United had a sudden prior drop of over $300, we quickly secured our reservation. And it's a good thing we booked when we did--within a week, the rates had gone back up.

Similar luck occurred with our car rental. Thanks to advice from the good folks on Trip Advisor, I started checking rates on the Discount Hawaii Car Rental site and when a big drop in price happened, I locked in our car rental at the new lower rate.

So there was good luck all around.

With the car, room and airfare booked, all we had to do was wait. And count down the days. And watch all the Netflix videos we could find pertaining to Maui.
