Our First State Park Visit--Whitefish Dunes

Up at 8:00 to shower and eat a quick breakfast of peanut butter toast. I thought buying a gallon of milk was overkill but it doesn’t appear that way now! After topping off the gas tank south of Egg Harbor, we headed across the peninsula to Whitefish Dunes State Park. The real destination had been Cave Point County Park but when we started hiking, we were hiking to the south on the Red Trail. Cave Point County Park lies to the north! Still, we had an enjoyable hike of a mile and a half. I checked out google maps later and found out that it was a driving error, not a hiking error. We made a right turn to Whitefish Dunes when going straight would have brought us directly to Cave Point on the Schauer Road. We decided we’d return here tomorrow as Cave Point was a place I really wanted to visit.

Shipwrecked Brew Pub & Restaurant was our dinner destination tonight and it certainly did not disappoint. I had been a bit apprehensive due to its 3 star rating on Yelp, but I should know better by now not to trust Yelp as it has steered us wrong more than once! Patty ordered the chicken drummies and chowder and the drummies were huge! They were close to the size of drumsticks you order at Super One. My Andouille Mac & Beer Cheese was a wonderful preparation, just enough to fill me up but not enough to warrant a leftover box. For this and two sodas, the cost was only $45! Easily the best deal we had yet encountered. When we asked the server about a steak recommendation, thinking we would be going to the Mezzanine restaurant next door, she recommended Chop, a steak house in Sister Bay, just a block or so from Al Johnson’s. I made a reservation on Opentable for 5 p.m. Wednesday as soon as we returned to the Newport.

Driving around Door County is amazing! The leaves have only been out for a short time and are in full green color, a lighter green as one would expect just after blooming. The peninsula features several small towns (by small, I mean a few hundred to over a thousand, with Sturgeon Bay the only decent sized town), all connected by two state highways and a number of county roads. All these roads are in excellent shape, and why not? If you cater to tourists as they do here, you want great infrastructure which Door County has. It is also fairly small, and the longest trip you'll find point-to-point is from Sturgeon Bay to Northport--even this route only takes an hour! From where we were staying, that trip to Northport only takes about 40 minutes. Most places we traveled to took little more than half that time. Between the short distances and the fact we were here the week before everything got super-crowded, it made for easy driving around this area.

We had another quiet evening in the room. After watching Jeff Dunham’s Spark of Insanity on TV, I crashed.

Kicking back in the room!
