State Park #23--Schoolcraft State Park
7/16/2024
I don't know how many State Parks don't have an actual office, but Schoolcraft is one of them! This park is, like Father Hennepin, quite small. But at least Father Hennepin has an office where you can buy t-shirts!
The forecast for today called for mostly sunny skies, particularly in the morning, with temps in the low 70's along with low humidity. Perfect! I arrived just before 10:00 and didn't notice any other vehicles in the park save for a camper I saw while hiking. My goal was to walk the entirety of the Hiking Club Trail which runs less than 2 miles and features some views of the Mississippi River.
This was just the fourth State Park I've visited which lie alongside the Mississippi River (Great River Bluffs, Frontenac and Crow Wing being the other three). Being this far north, of course, the river isn't very wide but it still made for some very scenic views from the Hiking Club Trail.
How small is this park? Only 225 acres, smaller than Father Hennepin and the smallest state park I've visited so far. It might be the smallest in Minnesota--I'll need to research this a bit. It's still worth the drive, especially being less than two hours west of Proctor. It's also a park I think Patty would really appreciate, especially given the easy terrain on this hike.

The Mighty Mississip! (Not so mighty this far north)
