A Tribute to Kimo (2014)
3/23/2025

These entries (and the ones on following blog entries) are mostly pulled from Facebook posts I made at that time.

Tuesday, January 21

After watching Kimo flying through the air with joy at Patty's arrival tonight, I believe that, at some point, there was cross-breeding with kangaroo.

Monday, February 3

Kimo hadn't played outside in ages. Wind chills of -20, alternating with snow and ice, will do that. I was outside earlier today clearing packed snow and ice off the driveway and thought he'd like to be hooked up to his 25' lead. We had a blast! Kimo loved chasing the snow chunks, biting them, biting my gloves, etc. How he looked after his workout:

Thursday, February 6

Kimo was running short on treats (which means, there was space on the Kimo shelf for more stuff). He was out of Petco Granulated Rawhide Beef Ribs, which are his favorite. He'll take one and run around while growling before settling down to demolish it. We also decided to give Charlee Bear Dog Treats with Cheese & Egg a try. Love at first sniff! Kimo, not me.

Friday, February 15

While doing his flying squirrel act, Kimo landed paw first on my big toe. It's just a sprain. Luckily my head didn't get in the way.

Tuesday, March 4

Every time we get snow and they plow, it reshapes what I like to call "Kimo's Bluff". He gets confused at first, as the terrain is changed, so is obliged to burrow into the fresh snow head first and then explore the higher terrain. This morning, he was also obliged to poop at the highest spot on the snowbank, forcing Patty to act like a Himalayan Sherpa, climbing the bank to retrieve the crap. I'm sure he enjoyed her predicament.

Wednesday, March 5

Kimo at Base Camp before ascending Kimo's Bluff.

Friday, March 10

The two of us caught napping!

Sunday, March 12

Kimo's new morning routine after eating is apparently running around the living room coffee table, growling at nothing in particular. I kept hearing this low growl downstairs and assumed it was Patty playing with him. But it seems he doesn't need anybody else to play--he just amuses himself sometimes. Goofy guy.

Wednesday, April 2

Kimo's vet visit went well. All tests came back negative, and he's down two pounds (no idea how). He rewarded himself by grabbing a wooden spoon off the counter and tearing it apart. Guess he felt he needed more fiber in his diet.

Thursday, April 3

Kimo must have had a heckuva good time up at Harbor City today. An hour ago he was crashed in my room. A half hour ago he made it halfway through the loft before crashing again. Now he's sound asleep on his blanket in the bedroom. He has fallen asleep, at one time or another, in five different rooms in our house since getting home. The Little Dude seems partied out.

Wednesday, May 28

In case there was any doubt Kimo was back in force, he spoke at length to me about not having easy access to his Nylabone tonight. I think he said "Ruh. Ro ro awuh ROOOO!!!" And then blathered on for a solid 30 seconds.

He's out of practice catching his tennis ball, however. One bounced off his head and under the fence. Lost. I added "More tennis balls" to next week's shopping list.

The lighter shading on most of Kimo's fur has darkened, turning very dark brown to nearly black! I don't recall that happening last year. He's cuter now. And I was checking him out this morning and realized he was thinner in his midsection and hip area, so we weighed him. He lost 2.4 lbs while we were gone! No wonder he's been so sleepy since picking him up.

Saturday, May 31

Photo opportunity missed--Kimo met Letha, the neighbor's Lab/Rottweiler/Pit mix, today. They're similar in size, similar in color (Kimo's coat is slightly lighter), same tail positioning. Eerie! Lots of sniffing and kissing. Letha has been socialized with cats but not dogs, so she was trying to bat Kimo like a cat does. Funny. They got along pretty well, and Kimo kept looking back over his shoulder as we led him back home. We're grateful he's fixed.

Sunday, June 8

Kimo getting up after his tennis ball!

Monday, June 9

Kimo had another "date" with his girlfriend. It lasted three minutes. He can't figure out what that deal is with her batting at him like she's a cat. All he wanted to do was sniff her stuff. And he wasn't crazy afterward about smelling three other dogs on me.

I need to get pics of those two together. They're really cute!

Monday, June 23

Goofing off with his tennis ball

Wednesday, June 25

Kimo's latest delicacy--music C.D.'s. He actually managed to pull two out of the CD case this evening. Main course was Martina McBride with a side order of Sarah McLachlan. He seems to like a plastics-rich diet, the lil shit.

Monday, June 30

Kimo hanging out with his girlfriend Letha

Monday, July 14

We found something Kimo likes more than running loose--being in the car! This came in handy this morning when he broke free from his leash. I brought the car up to the neighbor's building (where he always ends up), opened the car door and yelled out "Kimo!! Wanna go for a ride??" He covered the 50 yards between us in about 0.2 seconds and threw himself into the car. Heh. He might be smart but I'm smarter. Not by much, though

Saturday, July 26

Kimo's play session tonight with Letha was part playfulness, part affection, part circus act. I was amazed watching those two leaping over each other! Every so often they'd slow down and we'd think they were going to just lie down next to each other--and then BOOM they were off and running again. I need to get their next session on videotape.

Monday, August 4

Kimo didn't know what those things were stacked up on top of the neighbor's truck the other night (they were bales of hay). So he started barking at them. Goofy dude.

Two years ago, this little guy came into our life. He's now going on three and well into adulthood. Right. Three going on one, more like. Here he is in one of his more sedate moments.

Sunday, August 24

It's hiking day! The three of us piled into my car and headed south to the Munger Trail just south of Carlton for some exercise.

Patty and Kimo in a brief discussion about which direction they're going to walk

Taking a brief water break. We need to get one of those collapsible bowls to bring with us on these hikes!

Tuesday, September 2

Kimo "gets" to go to the vet today. Lots of scratching, itching, licking and biting, especially of his paws lately. His pits looked reddened this morning. Poor Little Dude.

Later, Kimo was as crashed out as he'd been in a long time. Part of it is that prednisone can cause fatigue. Part may be that his symptoms have already been alleviated a bit and he just feels more comfortable.

Wednesday, September 3

Kimo is freshly scrubbed with his medicated shampoo. He seemed to like the experience. He's energetic today bordering on aggressive.

Okay, I'm not going to go so far as to call Prednisone a wonder drug and recommend it be introduced into the Duluth water supply, but Kimo hasn't scratched or licked his paws in four hours. After a crazed run-back-and-forth-and-tear-up-the-yard earlier today, he's crashed on the living room floor now. And he smells nice, too

Tuesday, September 16

One more bath for Kimo tonight. He ran around all sudsed up, howling at our next door neighbor. I think he misses Letha by how he was looking over at their house tonight and whining.

The three of us crashed in the living room for a time tonight, Patty in her chair, Kimo and I on the couch.

Wednesday, October 1

Kimo loves riding in the car, loves going to the Vet. He can't wait to get into their office, and can't wait to get out! He got his Bordatella update today--weighs 51 lbs, the same as his girlfriend.

Thursday, October 2

Kimo howled at me when I came home today, for the second day in a row. I'm giving him the middle name Edina. An acronym, EDINA, which stands for Every Day I Need Attention. God help me if I dare greet Patty first when I walk in the door!

Monday, October 6

Kimo saw me riding my Kinetic Trainer for the first time tonight. He howled and danced back and forth trying to figure out how to jump up on me. Finally he gave up, ran into the kitchen and mauled his bone.

Tuesday, October 28

When we first got Kimo just over two years ago, he was a bundle of nearly constant mayhem and energy. Fast forward to today--he was hanging out in my home office with me this afternoon while I was watching TV. And then he wasn't. So I had to go look for him, wondering what he was getting into THIS time. I found him curled up, sound asleep on our bed. Apparently the bed is more to his liking than a carpeted floor.

Saturday, December 6

Kimo was acting somewhat gimpy last night and nearly all of today. Didn't want to run, had trouble jumping up on the bed, the couch, going up the stairs. No idea what was wrong--when we got home tonight, he tore out of his kennel, and later jumped right up on the bed. Not with the same intensity he usually shows, but still markedly better than he had been for the previous 24 hours. We're keeping a close eye on him.

Monday, December 8

Kimo was kinda dull tonight, so I grabbed his Nylabone and put it in my mouth. "Roo Roo Roo Roo Rooooo!!" he bellowed at me and the fun was on.

Wednesday, December 10

Such a good little poser!
