A Tribute to Kimo (2017)

These entries (and the ones on following blog entries) are mostly pulled from Facebook posts I made at that time.

Kimo eyeing me suspiciously as he works on his Nylabone
Sunday, February 5
Kimo chewed another pair of my gloves tonight. Patty caught him and ordered him into the kennel. I had a stern talk with him, really pissed, and then gave him the cold shoulder for about an hour.
He knew he was bad. Wasn't sure why since I scolded him several minutes after he did the deed. Came up to me in the office trying to make up. Ordered him out of the room, so he ran and jumped on his Kong, growling away, trying to get me to play with him.
No dice.
But then I realized that he didn't know why I was mad since I didn't catch him in the act. He just knew I was mad. So he was being punished without knowing why. Kinda dumb.
Besides, he's impossible to stay mad at when he gives you those big brown eyes and licks your knee. Or arm. Or whatever is available. And emits that little whine which he knows gets him stuff, be it treats or being let outside or any kind of attention.
He's a little shit sometimes, but a lovable little shit.

Freshly scrubbed at Bark Avenue!
Sunday, March 5
Today wasn't "hump day" but Kimo sure thought it was! First he met the neighbor dog, also a pit mix. Snif-sniff-hump-hump-hump-growl. Short play date
Then my buddy Todd made the trek to Duluth to see us. Kimo smelled Todd's dog on him, so after his initial hesitation to engage Todd, he sure engaged! Or rather, he thought he was engaged. Licking, humping. No actual contact--his (Kimo's) hips jerked back and forth with him attempting to wrap his front legs around Todd for support. By the way, Kimo was fixed nearly five years ago, so it's just a domination thing. At some point, he will try to do this to everyone but me, given the chance.
And talkative! He was howling at Todd as if to say "Hey, I gots to have it!!"
Kimo thought it was a good day, so it was a good day. And now he's happily crashed out.
Friday, March 10
Kimo tried to feast on my leftover Sammy's Pizza. He got busted when I heard the pizza cutter which I had placed on the pizza box hit the kitchen floor. He still made off with a little, and the box was left upside down on the kitchen floor.
Long timeout for him.

Happy National Pet Day from Kimo!
Wednesday, April 26
Kimo is not used to the height of the new bed. At least four times he wiped out yesterday and last night jumping off the bed.
Thursday, April 27
He's been up on the love seat before, today was the first time he lied down on it to take a nap!
Friday, May 5
Kimo started his night curled up in a ball with his face next to mine on the pillow. As soon as I got up, he moved over and curled up next to Patty. He went from his pack leader to his pack.
Sunday, June 4
Opening the windows downstairs brings out Kimo's "Hyper Guard Dog Syndrome". He can't sit still--every sound has him going from the dining room windows to the front door, back and forth, back and forth.
Thursday he was outside in the garage with me and came unglued because our neighbor TWO HOUSES AWAY went outside to his car. Fur puffed up on his spine, singing the song of his people, all of that. I'm ten feet away from Kimo but apparently he has to notify me, not of any intruder, nor any potential intruder, but anyone he sees and doesn't recognize. Goof.
Sunday, June 4
While I was on my Kinetic this morning, Kimo felt the need to alert me with his trademark mix of bark/howl that there was a truck parked next door he didn't recognize. It was the boys from Hom Furniture making a delivery to our next-door neighbors. Kimo just thought i needed to know even though I saw them pull up at the same time he did. Good watchdog even though he thinks he owns the complex.
Tuesday, June 27
Kimo licked the couch armrest soggy this morning. As I was talking to him about this, he went "Roo. Roooooooo" in a low voice back at me.I think that's Kimo-speak for "But Dad, it had your scent on it!".
Friday, June 30
Kimo met a similar size dog at Bark Avenue this morning. Went well for about fen seconds until the dog tried mounting Kimo. Then it didn't go well. Snarling and barking on both sides as I pulled Kimo off to the side.
Friday, August 4
Five years ago today, we were blessed to have Kimo come into our lives. Thanks CHA for letting us give Kimo his forever home!
Tuesday, August 22
The new flooring installed in our kitchen and dining area looks to have Kimo's stamp of approval!
Wednesday, August 23
Kimo doesn't usually like to sleep with his head on my pillow (unless I'm not on it, of course). Last night, I felt my pillow being pushed up and realized he was burrowing his head under it! I moved the pillow, he licked my face, I put the pillow back. He settled in and I could hear his breathing under my pillow. You'd think this would be uncomfortable for him but after seeing all the positions he's slept in, I guess I don't know everything about what's comfortable for him.
Saturday, September 2
Caught perfectly in mid-yawn, showing the Chow Chow influence on his tongue. The perspective of the camera, lens and focal length makes it look like he's huge!
Monday, September 25
It has become a sort of choreographed move--I open the door and simultaneously sidestep as Kimo flies through the door in full tackle mode 🙂 And then, of course, the required licking of me as soon as I sit down on the couch.
Right now he's in the loft, rolling around and happily growling to himself, anticipating my coming out into the loft to join him. Except I don't roll around. Haven't since my last drunk.
Tuesday, September 26
Well, Kimo has started his semi-annual shedding. I was petting him today and came away with a handful of dog hair. On the bright side, his annual allergies never kicked in much this season, at least not to the extent he needed medication for the symptoms.
Wednesday, October 4
The alarm went off this morning, I got up and walked the three steps to it, shut it off, went back to bed and laid my head back down on....dog!! It's like he was waiting for me to get up so he could cozy up on my pillow. When I tried to move his head, he groaned in protest, followed by a quick licking of my neck. Screw it....I got up.
Nice alarm clock he is.
Kimo groans a lot. It has nothing to do with old age (he's only 5!) it's just something he does when he's displeased with something or is just changing his position while sleeping. Hence his new nickname "Grumbly Guy". Alternatively I call him Mr. Grumbles.
Saturday, October 28
At one point tonight, Kimo was nowhere to be found. Not in any upstairs room, nowhere downstairs. Called out to him, no response. Where the hell did he go?
And then I opened the downstairs bathroom door and he came charging out. This door closes on its own unless opened fully (gotta fix that), and he must have bumped it on the way in to get a drink from the toilet (gotta fix that, too!)
After being released, he ran across the kitchen floor, turned, looked at me and howled "Roooo ROOOOOOO!!!!!" very loudly. Exactly how he did it the night I gated off the stairs not realizing he was still downstairs, trapping him where we weren't for a while.
Sort of cute how he tells me off when something happens he doesn't like
Wednesday, November 1
It's officially winter when Kimo romps in the snow and then flops on his back to roll on it a little.
Sunday, November 5
This morning, I gave Kimo his new (not brand new, he mauled it for an hour last night) meat-filled bone and he walked back and forth through the downstairs with it in his mouth. No chewing, just walking, like he was looking for something. I told Patty he was trying to find a place to "bury it for later". Sure enough, after I left the living room he stole quickly behind one of the recliners and left it on the carpet, as if to hide it from my prying eyes.
Hey, I wasn't going to chew it
Thursday, November 9
The amount of rolled up dog hair resulting from shampooing the carpeting in the house this morning was astounding. A couple of those clumps looked like actual dog tails Tomorrow is Round Two.
Kimo wandered around looking confused when I let him out of his kennel after the shampooing. "Damn, this joint smelled like me three hours ago, what the hell happened here?"
Tuesday, November 14
It had been a while since Kimo did damage to me, so I was overdue. Playing with him this afternoon, getting him riled up until he tore downstairs to get his Kong. Waited for him around the corner for him to race back upstairs, stuck out my hand to grab the Kong from his mouth, jammed my hand into his head. Index finger not broken, just a slight sprain in the second knuckle. As I was going "ow, ow, ow!!" he joined in, thinking I was singing to him (it sounds a bit like that when I sing), with a long howl.
