Our Trip to Hawai'i (2010)--Day 23
5/10/2010
This is the day you don't like to think about but it's on your mind the final few days you're here. You dread its arrival, but you know it eventually had to come. Naturally, it's a beautiful cloudless day! In fact, not a single cloud can be found over the West Maui Mountains, the first time that has happened during this trip.
Before checking out, I visited the Lahaina Harbor for some final pics. The Livewire Cafe was open but a broken printer meant that $9 I paid last week for an hour's Internet access was mostly wasted. No problem, we'll just print the passes at the Kahului airport.
We're resigned to going home; what choice is there, really? In 23-24 hours, we should be back home. It was a long day (and night...and morning) and our bodies, as they do on every trip, will feel like crap and out of sorts for a couple days. It's worth it, obviously, or we wouldn't keep coming back.
Where did this trip place in our list of favorite trips? Nowhere near the top. The traffic nightmares in Honolulu (not even taking into consideration the ticket I got), the relatively poor weather on Maui, those things took some of the shine off what would normally be a fantastic trip. I'm not saying the trip wasn't worth the money we paid...every trip to Hawai`i is worth every penny. But I don't think it's a trip we'll look back on in future years and say "Man, what an incredible trip that was!".
We have been lucky in that we were able to visit Hawai`i four consecutive years. That string unfortunately has to end. We're not sure where (if anywhere) we'll go next year. Maybe we'll take a shorter trip such as to Wisconsin Dells or Las Vegas. At this point, we're quite undecided.
We love Maui and will return at some point, possibly in 2012 or 2013.
