Hearts in Hawai'i

Our Trip to Maui (2012)--Day 4
4/25/2012

After an early breakfast just after 6:30, I hit the beach for an hour and a half or walking. Patty hit the sun and I joined her a half hour later. She didn't want to burn so came inside soon after I arrived at the lawn. I did just under two hours. The sun was hot but it's dry with nice trade winds which helped. After I come back to the room and showered, Patty headed up to the Alanon meeting on Shaw & Wainee Street, and I polished off my leftover spaghetti. Pretty good!

Ready to head to the MACC for a Jack Johnson concert

Da Kitchen

For dinner we drove up to Kahului and had dinner at Da Kitchen. We both ordered plate lunches; Patty got the Chicken Katsu and I opted for the Beef Teriyaki. Patty's Katsu was actually better, but we were pleased with both choices. Like Serpico's, there is no atmosphere here as your only view is of the parking lot. Service was very friendly and quick. When I asked her what the key ingrediants were in the sauce which came with the Katsu, she replied "ketchup and worcestershire sauce". Really, that simple? We'll need to try this out back in Duluth. Great food at decent prices is the main attraction here and the locals know it.

A "plate lunch", for those who are curious, usually consists of a choice of meat, served with two scoops of rice and a scoop of Macaroni Salad. These are filling, tasty and usually easy on the wallet. Be forewarned, this is not health food! The Loco Moco (Da Kitchen's version is a hamburger patty--I believe there's is eight ounces--with sauteed onions and an egg of your choice on top, then the whole thing is drenched with brown gravy. Having a paramedic nearby is a good idea!) is especially bad for you. But man, these buggers are ono.

My Teriyaki Beef was good...

....but Patty's Katsu Chicken was much better

Jack Johnson Concert

Then, after a quick stop at K Mart (I had ripped my beautiful blue satin aloha shirt badly and needed a replacdement), we drove to the MACC (Maui Arts & Cultural Center). This was a young, boisterous crowd on hand tonight for the Jack Johnson concert at the Castle Theater. Paula Fuga started things off and did a short set of four or five songs. “Parachute” brought the strongest response from the crowd. What a voice she has! John Cruz followed Paula and did a decent set although I frankly expected more from this former leader of the Hawaiian Style Band.

It was obvious that the overwhelming majority of the crowd was here for Jack. This was apparent from the number of empty seats near us during the first two performers. Jack didn’t disappoint, doing a very long set—in fact, this concert ran over two and a half hours! Near the end, he brought John and Paula back out and the three of them did a number of songs which were well received by the sold-out audience.

All in all, this concert was worth every penny. Patty preferred this to the two Brothers Cazimero concerts we had seen, but I still hold to the belief that you can’t beat the Caz when it comes to music by Hawaiian artists. We didn't return to to Lahaina until 11 p.m., and I didn't get to bed until nearly 1 a.m.

Decent seats at the MACC
