Our Trip to Maui (2012)--Day 5

Maui Ocean Center/Maui Tropical Plantation
Up a bit later than usual today (just before 7:00), we chowed and hit the beach for our morning walk, going for an hour or so. We waited around for the maid until after 10:00 but she still hadn't showed by the time we left; actually, she showed while I was shaving and I had asked her to come back in five minutes. Over a half-hour later, no appearance so we left and drove down to Ma`alaea to the Maui Ocean Center. It's not very crowded here today and we made our way through the various exhibits but arrived too late for the feeding at the main tank which has manta rays, sharks and other ocean fish. Ater leaving the Maui Ocean Center, we headed up to the Maui Tropical Plantation, which features a fully narrated tram tour which travels through the 60-acre plantation. Much like the Pineapple Express at the Dole Plantation, only more interesting (and cheaper). This activity was worth the $15/person charge.

Giannotto's Pizzeria
We drove to Wailuku afterwards for an early dinner at Giannotto’s Pizzeria. Chatted with the two young men working inside about Duluth and various places while we ate. It’s a small place, sort of a hole in the wall. No atmosphere, no view--but excellent pizza! It’s a thin crust affair with a crunchy crust and good sauce. We had sausage, pepperoni and onions on ours, and the onions were the star of the show, turning a good pizza into a great pizza!
Returning to the hotel after 3:00, we found it cloudy in Lahaina. Swam for a brief time in the ocean just before sunset. Realized we could have an outstanding sunset for pictures but in the five minutes it took me to run upstairs to our room, get the camera and return to the beach, the opportunity had been lost. That’s how quickly it can happen sometimes. A few minutes early, a few minutes late and the chance for one of those memorable pictures is lost.
In the hot tub with a Jehovah’s Witness—gak! Naturally, his discussion with a couple turned into a disagreement. They just don’t get it, how their approach is such a turnoff to people who might otherwise be receptive to their message. On the other hand, I'm at a loss as to why someone would be attracted to their “believe as we do or risk the consequences (hell)” message. Not singling them out, of course, as believers of many religions suffer the same myopia. They're just more vocal and pushy about it...
To bed early, as we need to arise early tomorrow morning for our snorkel tour.
