Our Trip to Maui (2012)--Day 6

Molokini Snorkel
Up at 5:45 for a quick breakfast of toast. After jamming my fanny pack with all I needed (keys, wallet, camera, confirmation email), we were on the road at 6:20, bound for Ma`alaea Harbor and the Four Winds II, run by Maui Classic Charters. We arrived at 6:45 and were the first ones in line to register. On a boat with a capacity of 135, there were only 60 on board today, which was perfect! We got fitted for our Rx goggles early, and we found ones which were pretty close to our eyeglass' prescription. Enjoying a continental breakfast as we headed out for Molokini Crater, we arrived after a short time. The sun was out when we left but disappeared behind mostly cloudy skies by the time we reached Molokini.
After some brief instruction along with their attempt to sell add-on stuff ($40 for a good underwater digital camera where they’ll burn your images to CD after use, $49 for Snuba), we hit the water. The water was a perfect temperature! For me, at least. For some who didn't grow up swimming in Lake Superior, it got cold after awhile. Wet suits were available for use, but we didn't see the point. Besides, Patty only lasted in the water for fifteen minutes, while I was out there for nearly an hour. For the on-board lunch, they offer hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, and veggie burgers. All the food offerings were very delicious.
On the way back to Ma`alaea Harbor, we observed green sea turtles and yet another humpback whale, this one with her calf. That makes at least four whales we’ve seen so far, impressive considering we're on the tail end of the annual whale season.
Teddy's Bigger Burgers
Back to the room, I showered while Patty napped. She woke up an hour later and went walking. I laid down and tried to nap but was unable. Finally I gave up and sat out on the lanai for a while. By this time Patty had returned so we headed over to Teddy’s Bigger Burgers. Having been to the one on Waikiki five years ago, I thought I knew what to expect. But these burgers were far better and the onion rings were almost perfect. I think our impressions of Teddy's in 2007 were affected by the fact we had just arrived on Waikiki and were fried from a full day of flying in the Delta cattle car.
Patty ordered the five-ounce burger with fries and a drink, I decided I wanted something more substantial so ordered the seven-ounce with bacon, cheese and grilled onions along with rings and a drink. We discussed how good they were afterward and basically agreed they were the best burgers we’ve had in Hawaii, and probably better than anything in the Duluth area other than the Anchor Bar.
7-oz burger with onion rings--perfect!
Stopping at Safeway after leaving Teddy's, we dropped $14 bucks on a few items, saving $10 with the coupon we had. Back to the hotel where we did our first load of laundry. They have nice washers and driers here, each costing $2.50/load. Tired from the day, we’re both asleep by 11:00.
