Hearts in Hawai'i
Our Trip to Maui (2014)--Day 21
5/25/2014
One final full day on Maui and it started with cloudy skies. It sure didn't look like there would be any sun worshipping today.
A more detailed look at this room we've stayed in for the past three weeks; it's not a premier room (those go for roughly $45 more per night and have new appliances, tile floors throughout, and other enhancements) but they did opt for the new doors and new patio furniture. The new doors were optional for condo owners as part of the 2009 renovations rumored to have cost $7 million. This room is still partially carpeted (in the living area) and partially tiled. The beds--there are two double beds and I don't know what happened to their plans to put a single king bed in this room--are not very comfortable. Mine leans slightly to the inside and I've awoke with discomfort in my lower back many mornings.
The 40-inch TV is very nice and includes access to Netflix (if you have an account, of course). Neither clock radio has an alarm which works.
Otherwise, the living room has the standard furniture including two bar stools, but with the placement of the bed furthest from the lanai, access to the stools is limited.
The glass table in the dining area is standard for rooms of this type. Kitchen appliances work well; the full-size refrigerator, oven/stove, microwave, coffee pot, toaster. The only minor issue is that the Cuisinart coffee maker drips when you pour a cup. Standard cookware exists and is sufficient (although a pizza cutter would have been nice). None of the included knives are very sharp.
The walk-in closet is large and has plenty of hangers, although the section closest to the door (which contained shelves in other rooms we've stayed at here) is blocked off for owner's use. There is an ironing board and iron, hair drier, vacuum cleaner and dust mop with dustpan. There is no in-room safe, but I haven't seen one in any rooms yet--at least, one which we could access. Lahaina Shores really needs to address this issue.
The bathroom is typical of non-premier units, with a shower curtain and bath/shower combination. This room has a medicine cabinet which is nice to have. I don't recall previous units having one. Lots of towels, hand towels, washcloths, etc.
They stocked one box of Klennex, two rolls of paper towels, six rolls of toilet paper, plenty of trash can liners for both the kitchen and bathroom trash cans, a small bottle of dish soap (we would need to buy more while here), six small bars of bath soap (we brought our own thinking none would be provided).
Overall, this room exceeded our expectations, and hopefully we will be renting this room again when we return.
Again, not much was happening today. It rained fairly steadily throughout most of the morning. After it quit, we walked the beach for a while. Last night's tide brought in a slew of rocks and pebbles onto the sand, so it wasn't an enjoyable walk. We spent the afternoon hanging out in the room, watching the parasailers off-shore. We also called Chase N Rainbows and reserved this room until 6 p.m. tomorrow for an additional $50. Luckily, nobody was checking in tomorrow, or we would have had to drive around for six hours after checking out until we returned the car to Alamo.
After discussing where to dine tonight, we decided to scrap our plans to go to Aloha Mixed Plate and go to Longhi's instead. In hindsight, I'm not sure what our thought process was because we had initially planned to go to Saltimbocca but were tired of Italian, so decided on Aloha Mixed Plate. And now we're going to another Italian restaurant?!
I called at 4 p.m. to see if reservations were required--they were not. When we arrived at 5:30, there were some tables in use but it wasn't close to being full. We parked in the pay lot at the Lahaina Center thinking that Longhi's validates. They do not do that--instead, they offer free valet parking. When we left the cost to park was $6 for 90 minutes, which we believe is a rip-off.
Jenna, our waitress, was great--she made recommendations and had an excellent knowledge of Longhi's menu, but we had been to Longhi's three times in the past. We knew what we wanted. Their pizza bread, with tomato based topping on some, Jalapeno based topping on some, is outstanding. Patty prefers tomato, I prefer Jalapeno, so it all got eaten. Then I got a small Longhi Longhi salad, their version of a Caesar--pretty good but the croutons were a bit softer than I prefer.
We shared a New York Steak Longhi and an order of Fettuccine Alfredo. The pasta was excellent, the steak was not; it was a little fatty and gristly and difficult to cut and eat.
Overall, we felt the cost ($81 pre-tip) didn't justify the quality of our meal. It was one of our less satisfying dinner experiences on Maui.
Back to the hotel and one final visit to the hot tub.
