Our Trip To Maui (2018)--Day 11
5/15/2018

After last night's feast, I needed a walk! So it was off on Front Street, getting as far as the canal just before the Cannery Mall. Patty walked the beach while I was doing this.

Today featured our second activity, a submarine tour with Atlantis Submarines. It's not cheap at $120 per person, so we were interested in seeing how this activity delivered.

It didn't. While is was very cool seeing the Cartheginian scuttled and turned into a man-made reef, there was a definite absence of fish compared to what we witnessed when we did the same tour in 1996. The best shots I got with my Nikon (with 50mm lens attached) weren't of the fish--they were of the coastline and the West Maui Mountains on the trip out to the sub and back. This is not an activity we'll be repeating.

The following pictures were taken on the Atlantis Submarine Tour:

Just as we were leaving our condo, the lady from Trinity Maid Service arrived to do the mid-stay cleaning of our room. When we got back after Atlantis, Patty exclaimed "Hey, she did the dishes!". This surprised me, as they specifically state in their documentation that the maid would be be doing this. As it turned out, they were right--she had simply loaded the dishwasher with our dirty dishes. I figured it was a good opportunity to see how the dishwasher worked.

I dug into my leftover Moco, only finishing a third of it. This thing is huge!

Tonight's dinner destination was Taverna up in Kapalua. We arrived somewhat early (reservation was set for when they open at 5:30)--when we got seated, we were at a nice table next to an open air window overlooking a golf course and the rolling terrain of Kapalua. What a setting!

Steve was our server and he started out explaining that there was a kitchen malfunction which prevents the making of their pasta dishes. When I replied that was a bummer because I was looking forward to trying out their much heralded Lasagna, he reassured me that the Lasagna is a baked dish and not impacted by the malfunction. Cool! Patty decided on their Caesar Salad with chicken (the chicken added $6 to the bill, and this is pretty standard for Maui). This turned out to be a small salad, as Steve had warned, so Patty was slightly disappointed. We ordered the Taverna Polpette for a starter, which is beef and bacon meatballs with chunky tomato sauce and grilled ciabatta on the side. This was an excellent starter but likewise somewhat small--at least in comparison to the Mega Meatball offered at Valentini's in Duluth.

My Lasagna, however, was outstanding, a large serving, and extremely tasty.

Our overall verdict? While the food quantity here was somewhat small, the quality was excellent but a bit pricey for what we got.

I've been trying to find that Lahaina, Maui T-shirt to match the muscle shirt I have at home, found here in 2016. Patty also told me about the visors offered at the Whalers General Store, but I didn't like the style, and cost $16, which I thought was expensive. We searched the T Shirt Factory in the Wharf, Paradise Lahaina in the Pioneer Inn, to no avail. I knew I saw this T-shirt a couple nights ago, but can't remember where! We have eight more full days to find it, however.

Hot tubbing tonight! We chatted with a nice couple from Washington state--he is from New Mexico and is also a Vikings fan! We talked about sports for a short time. His wife is equally friendly and engaging and is half Native American. The subject of her heritage came up because he didn't want to get fully submerged in the hot tub due to a sunburn he had suffered earlier today (this was their first full day here) despite his Latino heritage. We talked about the road to Hana, restaurants (I made a couple recommendations) until just after 9:00. These were the only other people in the hot tub with us tonight. I was hoping to see that Dallas Cowboys fan we hot tubbed with a few nights ago--he was going to the Paia Fish Market that night and we wanted to see what he thought of it, but gauging by the number of people in the restaurant (located where Burger King used to be) when we passed by just after 7:30, it's a safe bet that their food is very good.
