A Tribute to Kimo (2021)
3/30/2025
These entries (and the ones on following blog entries) are mostly pulled from Facebook posts I made at that time.

The New Adventures of Old Kimo--After taking a pic of him with my cell phone, while putting the cell phone back in my pocket, he broke free of my grasp and went hauling ass down the driveway. But as soon as I yelled out "GO FOR A RIDE??", he turned around and tore back past me and into the garage next to the car.
It was a good walk, taking him through the deeper snow in a neighbor yard--he loves this! Eventually we wound up in the clearing just west of the townhouse cul-de-sac where he hadn't explored since the first snow. He had a blast up there, eventually rolling around on some scent he didn't recognize or felt the need to cover up. On the way back, he barked at our neighbor which then inciting a mini dog riot as three other dogs in their houses heard him bark and felt the need to speak their piece.
After that workout, he's now crashed on our bed. I think I'll join him for a quick nap.

Kimo knows when he hears "Kimo, clean-up, aisle one" it means something munchable fell on the floor he didn't catch. And he comes looking. It even works if I'm in the kitchen and he's upstairs in bed with Patty (I just have to say it a little louder)

He found something!

Gettin’ some attention
Saturday, January 23
Patty caught a better view of Kimo than I did!
Monday, January 25
Kimo loves wandering around with his rawhide bone looking for a place to hide it for later. He found a spot tonight and jammed it into a love seat cushion!
Saturday, January 30
Kimo is once again freshly scrubbed courtesy of the good folks at Bark Avenue. He smells great and his fur feels so soft! Tonight's adventure with his rawhide bone ended with him trying to bury it UNDER the door to Patty's sewing room. Border Collie intelligent he isn't.

Playing in the snow again! He loves doing this

The New Adventures of Old Kimo--Rawhide Edition: Since getting his rawhide bone, he has only tried chewing it a couple of times. Lately he's been holding it in his mouth and walking around the house looking for a place to hide it. He found success one night when he planted it between the cushions of the love seat. Since then he hasn't found a desirable place.
Yesterday after he was done with it and we'd put the chew away, I went upstairs to find one of the mats in my bathroom turned upside down. He had tried to hide it there! But soon realized it was not the most advantageous spot.
I opened up a few closet doors and the door to Patty's sewing room in the hopes it would trigger a new spot. So far, no go--he just keeps pacing around with the thing, up stairs, down stairs, everywhere.

Bored!

The New Adventures of Old Kimo, Rawhide Bone Edition--Last night's travels with his rawhide bone eventually found him trucking upstairs. This was about the fifth or sixth time he'd traveled up there searching for a place to hide his bone for later but this time he was there for quite awhile; eventually we heard a scratching sound coming from the area of my home office.
Patty slowly crept upstairs to see if she could sneak up on him and ascertain what he was doing. Much to my surprise, he didn't notice her approaching the office as he was too engrossed in his task. He had the bone placed between the wall and my dresser (there is about five inches of space there) and was nosing articles of my clothing on top of the bone! My underwear, socks and jeans, with the soft case for my camera tripod put on top for good measure.
This was about the sixth different place he'd found to "bury" his toy, each time in a new location.
Now, we had assumed that when he got this bone a couple months ago, he'd chew it into nothingness. Nope! He only looks for a place to hide it where he can later fetch it, away from the prying eyes of his humans.

Kimo's annual visit with the vet went great! The usual tests which came up negative, treats from Dr. Lisa and a chance to check out the scent of about 1,000 other dogs on the office floor He's up three pounds from last year but it's not a concern. The only part he didn't like was the checking of his anal sacs. I called him a big baby for his reaction and he gave me a look like "Yeah, have someone push their finger up YOUR wazoo and tell me how you like it!" (Little does he know I get that done every year with my urologist)

The New Adventures of Old Kimo--a couple night ago I was on my right side in bed. Kimo squirmed up on the bed and planted his nose right into my armpit! "Kimo, that tickles!" I whispered to him. His response? "Well human, please allow me to lick your armpit"
He's timed out for a while this afternoon. I put the gate up at the top of the stairs to keep him up here while I was working on our finances, and he kept knocking the gate down and going downstairs. So, in the kennel he went. The thing is, he doesn't mind being in his kennel much anymore since it happens so infrequently. He probably sees it as a chance to get away from his domineering subject.

Kimo at Dougherty Vet waiting for his doc and getting a little impatient. "Where is she? Want my treats!"

The new adventures of old Kimo—what happens when he has time, two missing humans and an unattended garbage can!
Wednesday, May 5
The New Adventures of Old Kimo--just when you think you've seen everything he can do, Patty saw him trotting through the living room a couple nights ago carrying a 9 lb rubber coated dumbbell!! Must be bulking up, I guess. Maybe he thought he didn't have enough neck strength (he does)
Friday, May 14
I came home tonight to find Kimo waiting for me. In the time it took to take off my cap and Crocs, he gave me two low growls. Usually he howls so I guess this new utterance means something special. Obviously I didn't fawn over him quickly enough
Sunday, May 30
The New Adventures of Old Kimo--remember that rough and tough guy who didn't used to be afraid of any sounds? Yeah, no more. Every time we have a nighttime thunderstorm now, he comes into my office and whines until I give him attention. Poor little dude.

Just chillin’ ❤️
Friday, June 5
Awake at 4:30 this morning, so it made sense to join Patty and Kimo for their 6:30 walk! With it being only 71 degrees at the time, this was a fun walk. Kimo pretty much walked himself--it's a route he does a lot with Patty and knows very well.
Monday, June 8
Kimo has a new friend! He's a Yorkshire Terrier owned by our neighbors. They've met up twice and got along well, although Kimo is still having some difficulty believing that something so small is actually a dog. When the Yorkie left the other evening, Kimo whined for him to come back. Such a fluff.
Tuesday, June 9
Not sure what's up with Kimo but he was especially clingy to me tonight. After he jumped up on the couch for his required head scratching, I stopped to say something to Patty. After about five seconds, Kimo started whining at me! As soon as I resumed scratching, he quit whining.
Afterward he walked away, probably thinking "Heh, I got him wrapped around my paw!"
Wednesday, June 10
Kimo loves this route! And with me being retired and we're heading into summertime, there is ample opportunity to avail ourselves of this route. In this pic we're out there just after 7 a.m. There is a bridge over some railroad tracks just down the road where Kimo likes to put his paws up on the concrete and check out the area below. Sort of "surveying my domain" in his eyes. He's probably looking back at me with a "Less picture taking, more walking, please!" attitude.
Monday, June 15
Multi-tasking to me is scrolling through Facebook with one hand while scratching Kimo's back with the other ❤
Sunday, June 28
Kimo just scared off a big scary deer which had walked too close to our house
Wednesday, July 1
We've decided that Kimo is going to remain an only dog. At some point in the future, we'll adopt two dogs (after Kimo leaves us, hopefully several years from now), from a shelter who already know each other--preferably a male and female. As for breed preference, something in the medium range (40-60 lbs), and we've developed quite an affection for Pit Bull mixes--now that we know what big slobbery kissing everything babies they are!
I almost had a head on collision with Kimo tonight. He had his "project" up in the loft and was working on getting the biscuit out. Patty and I both went upstairs and he felt a bit threatened so went flying down the stairs. I moved off to the side just he blew past me. Man, that would have hurt. Me. Again.
Wednesday, July 8
Kimo's latest thing--walking over and giving Patty kisses while she's on the carpet trying to do her exercises. You can't laugh, say "Kimo, no!!!" and exercise at the same time, it turns out.
Tuesday, August 25
Kimo just walked into my home office, tail wagging. When I greeted him, he turned around and presented his back side to me. The message was clear--"Hip scratches, please!" After doing that for a couple minutes, I stopped and he walked back into the bedroom and jumped up onto the bed where Patty was slumbering.
I told Patty earlier this evening that he was slowing down a bit. That was before he dodged around me in the loft and tore downstairs at rocket speed protecting the "project" we'd given him.
He's still got some plenty of jump in those strong back legs of his.

Happy National Dog Day from Kimo! Here he is in his favorite chill spot
Sunday, September 6
He looks menacing here! Like people wouldn't want to approach him. That look, the darker fur, the stout body, all of that.
Monday, September 7
Squinting into the sun!
Thursday, September 17
Kimo has the McDonald's drive-through figured out. If he sticks his head out the window, they usually ask "Does he want a treat?" Why, I believe he does!
Friday, September 18
Checking out his new dog dish
Friday, October 1
Bath and nail clipping day for Kimo at Bark Avenue! When I went to pick him up, they had him in a large dog cage, and there was what appeared to be a foam beard on him! He drools sometimes but this was impressive! I asked how he did and the guy told me, "Pretty good. He doesn't seem to like male dogs very much" "Nope, he likes the ladies!" I replied. There was a large male dog there and I could only imagine the two of them trying to hash out who the Alpha Male was 🙂
He's so soft and smells so good tonight! He's been more affectionate than usual, also--he's probably just grateful that one of his humans rescued him from "That Place Where They Clip My Damn Nails!"
Sunday, October 31
Kimo was whining tonight. He'd had his dinner, he'd done his business, so what else? Yep, he wanted some play!
The upstairs loft and me playing keepaway with his squeaky egg are a match made in heaven for him. Instead of running around me while chasing the egg, barreling into me is a bonus. And for me, the scent of his mouth all over my hands and forearms when we're done playing his favorite game spells love.
He's not whining anymore He's sleeping. On my side of the couch, of course!
Saturday, November 20
Kimo chewing on his birthday present. He goes nuts over Bully Sticks!
And here, I have NO idea what he's doing!
Monday, December 13
Not really in the spirit but Kimo is compliant!
Thursday, December 30
Kimo made a new friend yesterday in the Mediacom tech who had to come fix problems we were having with three of our cable boxes. But he was extremely interested in the guy's scent, more so than normal. Turns out the guy owns a Chinchilla! Which led to an interesting conversation of Chinchilla ownership. Since I know nothing about these rodents, I was curious about what ownership was like.
