Hearts in Hawai'i
A Tribute to Kimo (& Kona) (2022)
3/31/2025
These entries (and the ones on following blog entries) are mostly pulled from Facebook posts I made at that time.
Thursday, January 6
Kimo is keeping my pillow warm. If he's still there when I come to bed I doubt I'll have the heart to make him move. I'll just squeeze in between him and Patty.
Monday, January 24
Just submitted an online application to Northern Lakes Rescue. Quite the process! I think I answered less questions on my last job application. Looking down the road a few months--April is our preferred time frame but we're somewhat flexible.
Sunday, January 30
Spike on the left, Ona on the right. Checking each other out at the PetSmart Adoption Event hosted by Northern Lakes Rescue. I would be happy with either but slightly prefer Spike because of his personality. Patty prefers Ona due to her quieter demeanor. They had some beautiful dogs up there!
Ona at Petsmart
Monday, January 31
The meet n greet with Kimo and Ona went very well! She's a sweetheart and more than capable of fending off his "advances". Once she figured out she's faster than Kimo he wasn't able to corner her for that dominating humping he likes to do with dogs (and people, right Justin? Right Todd?)
There is another dog we're trying to get a meeting set up and will likely decide in a couple days which one to adopt.
So much for my wanting to wait until March or April
Wednesday, February 2
Waiting for approval to do a Foster to Adopt of Ona for a week to see how she and Kimo acclimate to each other during that time. If all goes well, she'll probably be a new family member!
Facebook friends, say hi to Ona!
So the first night is about done. In twenty minutes or so, Patty will retire with Kimo to the bedroom. Ona will either go to her cage or will hang out in the home office with me for a while. Oh boy, Kimo is jealous when I give her attention! Sat there and growled, which she took as an invitation to play. His attempts to mount her have mostly subsided. I think/hope that they will get used to each other. Kimo is still sniffing her all the time "Damn, dude, how much info do you wanna gather?"
She's sniffing EVERYTHING in my home office now. A couple minutes ago she was lying right by the door and I thought she wanted to be with Kimo. Overall, they did okay together, but Kimo has this response to being with another dog where he drools. It's the thickest most disgusting mess, almost like snot. He left it everywhere tonight. On her back, my pants, the carpet. It's a huge adjustment for both dogs--brand new place for her, and his run of being an only dog for 9+ years has come to an end
Thursday, February 3
Overnight: Ona was fine in the kennel at first. I had to make a few trips downstairs, lastly to empty the dish washer. At that point, she yelped and barked some, so I let her outside. Not before Kimo heard her from the bedroom and started barking too! After she finished doing her business outside, I laid back on the couch--Ona jumped up on the couch, buried her head in my side and fell asleep! Very cute. Eventually I got her back into her kennel and we all slept.
For three hours. 3 a.m. came around and she started yelping. Patty went down there and took care of their morning "needs".
Here is the thing--Ona is pretty good in the kennel IF Kimo is out of sight. She really doesn't like him being loose while she's cooped up and is quite vocal about it.
After Patty left for work and Kimo was in bed with me, Ona would let out a short yip every few minutes. Not a major disturbance, just enough to keep me from getting back to sleep. I would rather liken it to a newborn who wakes up and cries every few minutes. Not that I would know about that, just sayin'.
She has gone submissive before him, but is fairly relentless at times in wanting to play. Kimo engages for a while, and then starts to growl at her. She mainly has been taking this as an invitation for more play! Maybe it is, I don't know, but he was stressed last night, all foaming at the mouth and drooling everywhere.
Oh, and now they're BOTH jealous of me giving the other one attention!
We'll see what today brings. I'm thinking of bringing Ona alone into the bedroom with me. Kimo does fine with having the run of the rest of the house, so this might be a way for me to get caught up on sleep, depending on how she reacts to being in the bedroom.
Reveling in the calmness--Ona is on my office floor napping, Kimo is in bed with Patty napping. They had a quick battle earlier this afternoon (about two seconds), with Kimo establishing dominance. Patty pulled Kimo away leaving Ona to wonder "What was that? All I did was jump up and try to take my food dish off the counter!!"
Thursday, February 3
I think Patty is in love!
While cooking some chili and sitting in Kimo's blue chair, Ona crawled up into my lap, put her head on my chest and looked at me. It was this sort of "Still not sure about me, huh?" look. My heart melted. Chili finished, I got up, she stayed and stretched out on his chair. I said "God help you if he sees this, girl"
Friday, February 4
After turning our bedroom into a Battlebots arena this morning, they've worn each other out. Ona was just having a dream. I like them this way
Those two are hilarious. They play fight all over the house, and then five minutes later Kimo is sacked out in my office, Ona on the love seat in the loft. Just recharging their batteries. After watching them since Wednesday evening, Kimo is hardly the innocent bystander. All she has to do is walk near him, he growls, she raises her paw like "Oh, you want some of this?" and he responds "I believe I do!!" Again.
Also, I'd forgot how much puppies sleep!
After watching the two doggos for a couple days, I feel fairly safe in saying there is no risk of serious harm to Ona. She does need to know when to back off, however, and that will take time. Right now she doesn't back off, going until she gets puppy tired and needs a nap. The question of harm is what has kept me reluctant to support keeping her.
Ona had herself a day:
1. Play fought with Kimo a bunch of times
2. Started learning how to scale snowbanks
3. Got to crash in Patty's chair
4. Took a dump on the living room entryway (I wasn't paying enough attention, my bad)
Not a bad life, actually. Other than #4, of course, but I'm sure she wasn't overly troubled by that.
Kimo's in bed with Patty, probably thinking "Thank God I get the female human to myself for awhile! When's the male human getting here?" Soon. Two straight nights of five hours of sleep has to change.
Saturday, February 5
Ona barked us awake again at 3 a.m. After letting her outside to do a little business, she was okay in the kennel for about 15 minutes and then staring yipping and crying. We brought her into the bedroom and put Kimo out of the room (I am NOT a fan of this!). Kimo started banging on the door with his head "Let me back in, you farging iceholes!!"
The inevitable conclusion? Everyone ended up in the bedroom. We'll see how it goes. Ona jumped up on the bed, Kimo jumped down and went to his nice cushion bed he's had available (but hasn't used very often) for years.
One thing I do like about having her on the bed--I sleep great with her snuggled against me.
[update] After four more hours of sleep, the guys are up and playing all over the loft. When I awoke this morning, Kimo was planted against me, Ona stretched out on Patty's side of the bed. An interesting turn.
She's such a momma's girl!
Sunday, February 6
Ona started in the kennel last night--she hadn't had her evening poop and Patty was concerned she'd do it in our bedroom. But after she did her bark bark bark at the company's trucks when they came to plow our driveways, I let her upstairs to sleep with us. It went great! No territorial disputes between the dogs (nor the humans!) and I got my best sleep since we started fostering Ona.
Kimo has developed what I call "The Snowplow" where he gets a little low and basically pushes Ona across the floor using his weight and strength advantage. After he's done this, he turns around and runs away--she follows him and they repeat the process. I'll have to record this with my Iphone later today; funny stuff!
Monday, February 7
Zonked out! Within a minute of hitting Patty’s lap Ona was sleeping…and snoring
Tuesday, February 8
I think Kimo and Ona are settling into a routine. They haven't played much today. Kimo seems to be feeling okay but they just haven't taunted each other. A sign of acceptance? I hope so. We used to ask each other "Is the room Kimo-proofed?" Now it's "Is the room Ona-proofed?" She's extremely curious around everything, and I think is quite smart. She's doing much better on the "Sit" command. Going to work on "Stay" once she has this down.
Taking her and Kimo on their first outside walk later this afternoon.
Ona had her first case of the zoomies! I have no idea what started it, but while I was sitting with Kimo in the office, suddenly this was this sound of loud thundering paws tearing up the stairs, through the loft and into my office. She paused for just an instant before reversing her course, ending up in the living room. She did this about five times before she had to stop to get a big drink from her dog dish.
This whole time, Kimo just watched her. They had finished their only real play session of the day, chasing each other and Kimo's blue Kong as I tossed it through the loft.
Maybe that was it--she hadn't had enough exercise. That would explain her attempts to mouth Patty and I all day. She tried to engage Kimo several times throughout the day but he wasn't interested. Not until she came upstairs with his Kong in her mouth and taunted him with it!
Today's Ona update (I remember doing this for Kimo so why not with her?):
1. She's s Sherpa! I had brought her over to the corner snowbank and she climbed that five-footer like she'd been doing this for years! I knew she was agile but this still surprised me a bit. Upon not finding the deeper snow up there to her liking, she jumped--literally--from the top of the bank. Not the best idea as she came up limping a bit. The section of driveway she landed on was slick and she sort of lost her footing as she landed.
2. Yesterday's reluctance of Kimo to play was a very temporary thing. They had a spirited play session this morning, including Ona jumping over Kimo's back because he wouldn't let her get by. Impressive. Do we have the makings of an agility competition doggo?
3. The amount of time it takes her to poop is inversely proportional to the wind chill. She's been outside three times this morning for a total of nearly 30 minutes. Nothing.
4. They'll be alone for a couple hours later today, as I have an appointment. Obviously, Ona will go in the kennel while Kimo will have his usual freedom. I'm tempted to rig up my camcorder to see how she'll react
Wednesday, February 9
After yesterday's relative inactivity, the guys were active today! I missed a fantastic video op when Ona got the zoomies downstaris tonight and Kimo tried to chase her. There were a couple nice collisions which made Kimo's chair rock pretty good 🙂 Right now they're taking turns chewing on Kimo's bone. By that, I mean he chews it until she takes it from him. He gives me this look ("A little help, Dad?") and I tell him "Well, you're bigger than her! Assert your authority!!" They've both been walking around with soggy neck fur tonight
Oh man. How could one not fall in love with this? ❤️
Thursday, February 10
This morning has had it all for the guys--intense play, The Snowplow, soggy necks, and now Kimo is crashed in my office, Ona is crashed in the loft. I also learned that Ona's separation anxiety only kicks in when she's the only life form around. If Kimo is nearby, she's fine. Or so it seems thus far.
Friday, February 11
Today's doggo update:
1. All quiet on the Western Front. After a very active day, the guys are resting a little this morning. They even slept in--both were still on the bed twenty minutes after I got up!
2. Ona takes forever outside! I swear, she spends more time in the bathroom than Patty
3. Oh, she loves being on my side of the bed at night! It was extremely tough to coax her over when I came to bed.
4. They're not nearly as jealous of the other getting affection as they were when Ona first entered our lives. She initially had the habit of just barging in whenever I was petting or
scratching Kimo but that has happily subsided.
5. I completed and submitted the official adoption form last night. With payment being made next Monday, Ona will be a member of the family!
Ona got caught trying to chew a hole in the loft carpet. There are deterrent sprays for this, so Patty's going to pick some up at Petco after she gets off work. Hopefully it will work and won't make the house smell terrible.
If they were any closer, they'd be on top of each other!

Daily Doggo update:
1. If we were going to change her name, now would be the time to do it. And so we did. For whatever reason, I'd been having a hard time getting used to "Ona", despite it being a short name supposedly easy to remember. But several times I heard myself calling her "Ono". Do I want to refer to a dog as the woman who did her part in driving a wedge into arguably the greatest band of all time? 🙂 Of course not. After discussion, we added a "K" and ended up with "Kona" This is good for three reasons. First, Kona means "lady" in Hawaiian. I know, it also means "leeward" referring to the side of an island, but many Hawaiian words have two meanings. Second, Kona and Kimo just has a nice ring to it--that alliteration thing, if nothing else. Third, Ona and Kona sound similar so if she was recognizing the first, she should have an easy time recognizing the second.
2. Is Kimo accepting Kona? It seems so--he's letting her get much closer to him as they rest than he did a week ago.
3. Patty noticed, as I did, we're both sleeping better with Kona in the bed. Four bodies in a King-sized bed might seem constrictive, but for us it just works. If it feels crowded, Kimo jumps off the bed--he's got his own double padded bed nearby which he uses a lot, particularly in the summer when it's 3-5 degrees warmer in our house.
4. Every day has brought something new to our lives. What will today bring?
With the contract signed and payment made, I can now announce this as official--say howdy to Kimo's little sister Kona!
Sunday, February 13
Kona had fallen asleep in bed with her head on my forearm, stretched out between Patty and I and everyone was resting comfortably.
Until Kimo fell off the bed!! Kona jumped up and was checking him out, apparently concerned as he walked over and went back to sleep in his bed. And now she's curled up at Patty's feet.
This is the third time Kimo has fallen out of bed, and I always get worried when he does. Too easy for a doggo to get injured this way!
While I brought Kona over to my brother's to watch the 2nd half of the Super Bowl, Patty said Kimo moped around and didn't want to play with her. Me thinks he missed his sister! As soon as she came home, they went ramming around the upstairs for a while, burning off excess energy. Now both are curled up in bed ❤️ Kona did great with Bruce's dog, Lily. Lily was a bit freaked out but eventually they settled down and had a "singing contest" trying to impress each other with the sound of their voice.
Tuesday, February 15
Kona made a new human friend!
Wednesday, February 16
Today's Doggo update: Kona found out how food possessive Kimo is. I had just emptied out a food bag into their Vittles Vault when she let out two sharp yips. I chased Kimo into their kennel. She's okay but wondering "What the hell?? All I did was sniff his empty food bag!!!!" But five minutes later they were sniffing each other through the kennel bars.
Other than that, they've been getting closer and engaging in vigorous play. On the bed, three's company, four's a crowd. Kimo figured this out three nights ago and has been sleeping on his own bed while Kona alternates between snuggling up against Patty and me.
It's already been two weeks since Kona came into our lives! It only took a few days for her to melt our hearts.
Thursday, February 17
Kona got to spend some time out in the garage with me while I rode the Kinetic this morning. All these new things to sniff and check out, she loved it! She also found out that she shouldn't try to sniff my cycling shoes while I'm pedaling! A good lesson learned. Eventually she was satisfied so settled down on a rug to nap while I completed my ride.
Right now the guys are crashed on my home office carpet after rampaging through the upstairs playing. They won't stay that way for long as Kona's batteries recharge very quickly!
Friday, February 18
Today's Doggo update: I was sitting in the love seat (on the side Kona likes, of course!) and she came up to me. I thought she was going to jump up into my lap, but instead she only made it up into my lap with her front paws, her back paws remaining on the carpet, ready to take a quick nap. And then she did this sort of backwards slide off of me, eventually ending up on the carpet, curled up on top of my feet. It looked rather like a slow motion fall. Kimo gave her this "Man, you're such a doofus" kind of look before resuming his nap.
That's been our morning--a heavy play session in the loft ending with a good nap. Kona is still limited to either upstairs or downstairs (whichever level I'm on) and doesn't have solo access to the master bedroom yet. These restrictions will end in due time. Kimo is still trying to teach her how to knock the gate down blocking access to the other level, but she isn't getting it yet.
Before taking a nap with Patty late this afternoon, I had commented that "Kona doesn't seem to care anything for Kimo's bed"
Ten minutes later, guess who was on his bed? Hint: Not me nor Kimo. She seemed to like it.
And right now, of course, she's stretched out on Patty in her recliner, covered with a blanket, getting some sleep
Saturday, February 19
Today's Doggo update: 6-12" of snow possible for Monday/Tuesday? Can't wait to get the guys out in that!
Kimo's 25-ft lead snapped in half earlier in the winter while I had him outside. We have a 12-ft lead (I use it so Kona can explore and find the right spot to do her "business"--she's kind of finicky that way) but we wanted a longer lead. A new one rated for up to 65 lbs just arrived from Chewy.com. Will have to try it out on Kimo.
Kimo goes submissive for Kona now! He doesn't stop "fighting", he just gets on his back, swatting at her and trying to nip whatever is closest to him. I've never seen him do that before and was quite surprised.
Vet appointments need to be made for both dogs. It will be interesting to see how Kona reacts to a new place and also to her new vet!
Sunday, February 20
First time together on the couch!
Monday, February 21
Two dogs, two different reactions to a snowstorm.
Kimo: "Meh. I've seen worse. Where did those damn rabbits hide their turds?"
Kona: "Ohmygod, let me back in the house!!!!"
Today's Doggo update: They got into a semi-serious fracas earlier this evening over their "shared" bone. Kimo went under Kona and she took serious exception to it. Lots of loud exclaiming on both parts, more so than their normal play vocalizations, so I got them apart and let them cool off a bit. After a short time-out, they were fine. They're still working out boundaries and are getting better as the days pass. We thought about getting a new bone out of the Dog Pantry but figured they'd just battle over the freshest bone anyway
We already knew that Kimo loves the snow and the cold--today we found out that Kona doesn't. She's thinner and has much less fur covering her (not to mention the still bald spot where she was fixed!) so this doesn't surprise me. It was rather funny watching her haul ass back into the garage in the face of a particularly strong wind gust.
Kimo's downstairs in his chair, Kona is upstairs with me for a while. I have to let her outside one final time at 11 p.m. Ugh. It's something which has to be done each night as she doesn't yet have the ability to hold it nearly as long as Kimo can.
Tuesday, February 22
They both want that bone!
Thursday, February 24
Today's Doggo update: I figured out very quickly how to get Kona all fired up. Now I'm learning how to calm her down. She seems frenetic and unpredictable but in many ways, she's more predictable than Kimo. She's reacting well to a few words, such as "sit", "no" and is showing progress on "stay". Oh and she knows "kennel" too! She doesn't go to her kennel because I think she still associates the word with her old place, but it does get her attention, good when she's being a butthead around Kimo.
They groomed each other today! What the heck, do we have cats or dogs here?? It ended with Kimo giving Kona a slight slurp across her muzzle. Too cute.
I get the final duty of the day with Kona, letting her out around 11 p.m. each night. Tonight, for the first time, when I called her, Kimo stayed upstairs. Speaking of stairs, I've noticed she likes to run just ahead of Kimo and tries to get into his lane in an attempt to push him off the side. He doesn't quite get "Hey, I'm twice her size, I can just muscle her out of the way" most of the time. He sure gets it with their bone! He didn't want to give it up tonight and simply took her on a tour around the living room until she got the message and let go.
Saturday, February 26
Today's Doggo update: Got Kona home from her first bath at Bark Avenue and man, did she smell great! I don't know when her last bathing was.
Robin at Bark Avenue said that she was such a nice dog to deal with, no meanness at all, even trying to crawl up into Robin's lap at one point. I had a bit of a surprise when I went to pick Kona up, however--for those who don't know Bark Avenue, they have an entry area where you drop off your dog. They then take the dog through a gate into a larger area where the grooming and bathing happens, complete with a number of cages to house dogs, especially the bigger ones. The smaller ones and those they trust generally hang out in an open area.
Kimo is always put into a cage, given his proclivity toward dominating any other dog he sees. So I scanned the cages when I arrived, looking for Kona and then realized she was out in the open! Robin said she did great there and was very social with the other dogs. In fact, I would say that Kona is much better socialized than Kimo is.
Thankfully, Kona loves riding in vehicles! After a few minutes of looking out the back window, she laid down in the back seat and took a quick nap. Kimo, in the meantime, seemed to miss her. Upon arriving back home subsequent to dropping her off, he was looking around like "Hey, she was here a short time ago. Where'd you put her???"
I thought there would be a mini-melee when I got her home to Kimo but nothing happened! There were really mellow with each other throughout the afternoon
Tonight after getting home from the Golden Inn? Yeah, it was Wrestlemania part whatever. They tore all around the loft burning off excess calories
Robin told me "You got a good one there". Each day that seems to be more and more true.
Sunday, February 27
Today's Doggo update: I may have mentioned this before, but that final late-night letting outside of Kona is perhaps my favorite time of day/night. It's dark, it's quiet, it's just she and I outside, the crunch of snow under my Crocs, Kona looking for that perfect spot to do her final business of the day. She has gotten much better at responding to the "C'mon girl, let's go out". Normally a very sound sleeper, this now gets her interest quick quickly
Kimo has also learned that this final daily trip outside is for her only. He no longer crowds the back door hoping to sneak out for a quick whiff of night air and a final scout of what the rabbits have left in our yard during the day.
After which, they both head back upstairs where they join Patty on the bed. I join them later.
Last night? I headed to bed and found them laying side by side next to Patty! Kimo had graciously left me just enough room to slide in next to him but apparently I was crowding him more than he wanted, because he moved up to the head of the bed, his butt against Patty's head and his head on my pillow. Patty didn't notice this affront by his choice of which human his butt was pointing toward, and we all fell asleep.
It's a good life.
Tuesday, March 1
Exploring!
Thursday, March 3
Kona decided my just worn jeans would make a nice little blanket!
Friday, March 4
Tight fit for Kona this morning!
The look I get from Kona when I announce “Mom’s home!!”
Saturday, March 5
Last night when I went to bed, I noticed Kimo and Kona stretched out in bed, facing each other, with their paws resting on each others. Want to make me smile? Show me something like this. This morning I awoke to a mugging from BOTH dogs. Pretty cool way to wake up!
Sunday, March 6
Kona found her favorite napping spot in my office--she loves to curl up on dirty jeans, shorts, whatever she may find there, and catch a quick snooze.
But now I can envision the dialogue:
Patty: Why do you leave your dirty clothes in the corner of your home office?
Me: What, I'm supposed to make Kona sleep on bare carpet???
Tuesday, March 8
In bed with Kimo--time for a close-up!
Today's Doggo update: The belt loop on Kimo's dog collar has been loose for a number of months. No big deal, there was no danger of his collar coming off, there was just a short section of belt hanging down from the buckle.
No danger until we got Kona.
She loves to grab and pull on that loose section of collar! Kimo doesn't like this, of course, and it nearly always leads to growling and each dog chewing on the other dog's neck fur.
But today she managed to pull until the buckle came loose from the collar! Walking into the kitchen, I noticed his collar laying on the kitchen floor. Luckily we had a spare leather collar stored away in Kimo's Pantry, but Kona doesn't like this one as much--there isn't a section of loose belt for her to grab on to!
Wednesday, March 9
Kona waiting for her Vet. She did great! 42 lbs. such a nice social dog
Friday, March 11
Such a sweet face!
Sitting in a kitchen chair earlier today, Kimo came over to me and put his front paws up on the chair. As I was giving him affection, Kona showed up and put her paws up next to Kimo's. I thought Kimo would react but all he did was lick her left ear and her face. So awesome. He has to keep reinforcing his boundaries to her, but she's learning...somewhat
Kona has figured out how to negotiate stairs, especially descending them. When we first got her, she was sort of tentative and looked a little bow-legged going down them one step at a time. Now? She just flew down them--I mean, I THINK her paws touched a stair once or maybe twice but it was just this fluid kind of thing. Like she teleported herself from the top to the bottom in an instant. Impressive! Even more so was avoiding Kimo's recliner which is only four feet of so directly in front of the stairway.
And OMG she is so easily riled by me. I just go "HUH! HUH!" in an excited voice while tapping my feet on the carpet and off she goes. It makes Patty cringe a bit but I can't stop laughing watching her go from zero to zoomies in an instant 🤣🤣🤣
Saturday, March 12
The guys begging (in vain) for Patty’s banana
Monday, March 14
“Mom’s home!!! LET US OUT!!!!!!”
Tuesday, March 15
Today's doggo update: On a daily basis, there isn't much new to report when you've had a dog for six weeks. They know each other pretty well, boundaries have (for the most part) been established. Kimo has accepted Kona into the family--that was the big "acid test" and the one in which we were really crossing our fingers. She's getting more used to her new home each day and man, does she love Patty! It's mutual.
Dogs develop their habits, routines and rituals. One of Kona's involves what happens after Patty goes to bed each evening. It starts with the bedroom door open, so they can wander around the upstairs as they wish. But they don't. Kimo has his double padded bed on the floor where he sacks out and Kona has our bed where she will usually snuggle up with Patty.
But each evening around 10:30 I'll hear that telltale jingling of a dog tag on Kona's collar as she approaches my home office. She'll walk in, sit down and stare at me. It's obvious--she wants one more trip outside! And so I'll take her out, enjoying the evening air (when it's not -10!), the stillness and the quiet as she searches for that perfect spot to pee. If there is a train passing by on the tracks a couple blocks from our house, that will be the only sound. It's a comforting one, for whatever reason.
After finishing her business and being let back into the house, she runs upstairs and into the bedroom. At this point, the door gets closed until I come to bed. When I do, she'll usually be propped up against my pillows. Getting her to move over has been a bit of a challenge but has gotten easier. Once she feels me hit the bed and I say "Over, girl", she'll move. Somewhat begrudgingly, of course.
Of all their routines and habits, I enjoy this one the most.
Tomorrow her training continues. She's getting pretty good at recognizing her name so that will continue for a couple more days. After that. we'll move on to basic commands such as "sit", "stay", "heel" and "come". I believe she's actually smarter than Kimo--certainly less stubborn! So this should go well. If not, there are places I can take her where they'll train me
Friday, March 18
Patty took this great pic of Kona perched on the arm of the couch tonight!
Monday, March 21
Today's Doggo update: Kimo's annual visit to the vet--no issues! They biopsied that lump under his chin and it's benign, just a fatty buildup which isn't bothering him at all. He's under 50# for the first time since he was a puppy! I do believe the activity/stress of having a new puppy sister has much to do with this.
Watching Kona slurping loudly from her water bowl, I told her "I think you have a drinking problem!"
She looked at me as if to say "I don't have a drinking problem, I have a drinking solution!!"
She's doing well being in the kennel. She gets a treat when she goes in there and has a toy or two to play with. She'll whine a little at the start and then settles down.
Tuesday, March 22
Well, this was a new one. Kona just introduced us to the world of "Mini Zoomies". She was on the couch gnawing her bone when suddenly she leaped off the couch, took two steps, turned around, took too steps back and leaped back up on the couch, where she resumed gnawing her bone. Patty and I started laughing and looking at each other like "What the hell was THAT???"
Wednesday, March 23
Today's Doggo Update; the crate training has served Kona well. She's more relaxed when out, doesn't complain (just a little, a couple times) when put in there, hasn't messed any inside surfaces in the house since this started. Added bonus (if you can call it that)--she pooped with me for the first time this morning! Damn, this took her long enough, and she is very particular about where this does this. Contrast this to Kimo who does a very quick job. You know how some say that women spend a lot more time in the bathroom than men? Applies to dogs too, it would appear (ducking)
Sunday, March 27
No luck begging stir-fry so time for the guys to take a nap!
Wednesday, March 30
Kona's been a super good girl almost all day, so she gets to spend extra time in my office tonight before her final trip outside prior to retiring to her kennel. She's had no accidents in two weeks. She pulled Kimo's collar off again! So he gets to be naked while in the house.
Thursday, March 31
Kona has gained three more pounds! She's now within four pounds of Kimo. I had a feeling she was going to end up bigger than him--give it another month and she'll be there. She's already a smidge taller than he is, but he's more bulky. She just got her Lyme's vaccine up at Dougherty Vet Clinic so all dogs concerned have all their vaccinations up to date. And are crashed out on my home office floor
Friday, April 1
Good training with Kona in the garage earlier this afternoon. Doing better with the leash walking (not zigging or pulling, basically walking beside me), and getting better on the "sit" command. Did a little work on "stay" with more to come this coming week. Just 15 minutes each day works well and doesn't overwhelm her. The goal is for her to get the basics down and then perhaps looking for other stuff she can learn.
Her reward was playing fetch afterward. She loves chasing that tennis ball as I bounce it across the garage floor! After shaking it for a few seconds, she brings it back (offering a Lil Jac treat always helps) for another chase/retrieve. She doesn't lose interest after three or four repetitions like Kimo always does. It's weird having a dog who's focused and not inflicted with Doggo Attention Deficit Disorder
Saturday, April 2
Another Kona first--she jumped up onto Kimo's chair for a quick nap this morning! Kimo gave me this look like "Dad, you gonna let her do this?" and I shot him a look back like "Kimo, you gonna let her trample on your sacred turf like that?" Nothing resulted, of course. Patty came home soon after and both doggos ran to the back door, her Welcoming Committee poised for the greeting.
It wasn't a good walk with her this morning--she was acting charged up over something. Maybe it was just the rapidly melting snow revealing new sniffies underneath which she felt she had to check out. After a couple minutes, I let her go where she wanted. Tomorrow's another training day.
Because Kimo likes to bend metal with his bare teeth, they now have a new (used) kennel! It's the same size as the previous one, sold for $30 at Goodwill. This was a pretty good deal. I told Kona to go in there and they both went! They looked at each other like "what are YOU doing here!" before I opened the cage door and they ran back out.
Yo Dad, any steak for us?
Monday, April 4
Kona has us figured out, especially Patty. She has this certain bark which tells us "EMERGENCY!! EMERGENCY!!. Gotta pee or poop!!". And so out she goes.
But...she also does the same exact bark when she just wants to go outside and sniff some yard or take in some fresh air. Exactly the same. So now we have to pay careful attention to the timing of this. Example; if she peed 30 minutes ago and is barking again, it's fake.
The problem with this (and I believe it's her little Devil Dog design) is that she's spacing out her pees and craps. We have to pay attention to both aspects now.
But it's hard to stay mad at that sweet little face! Especially when she jumps up on the couch and puts her head in my lap. And she is fast becoming the better minded dog. Apparently Kimo The Neanderthal thinks he can rest on his laurels of being the Only Dog for ten years and that nothing more is expected of him. Brat.
We have the Embark DNA test kit in our Chewy cart for purchase the next time we need to buy dog food. I'm very interested in knowing just what the heck breeds of dog make up Kona! My money is on a primarily Lab/Greyhound mix.
Friday, April 8
Kona taking a nap, protecting her bone at the same time! (Kimo likes to take it when she's not looking and vice versa)
Saturday, April 9
Had a very productive walk with Kona tonight. She went a little crazy when Patty walked Kimo the opposite way on the street, but other than that she was focused and pretty much stayed alongside me. She got to do some exploring and sniffing afterward, which she seemed to appreciate
While i was putting on a new pair of socks, Kona was trying to steal them! Goofy girl

Kona goofing off 😁❤️
Sunday, April 17
With the Kong Bounzer partially destroyed due to their tuggy games, Patty found something quite similar to a Kong Tuggee, rated 5 on a 1-5 toughness scale. They've been having fun with this today, but aren't very happy when I take it to check out for any cuts or pieces missing suggesting it's not a tough as claimed. It took about a half hour for Kona to figure out "Oh! Fun stuff!!" but it's been Go Time! ever since.
Kona is filling out nicely. You can't see her ribs anymore and it looks like the weight she's putting in is mostly muscle. She's getting strong! And has made Kimo go a bit submissive more than once. I was wondering who the dominant dog would turn out to be, but I believe it's turning out to be mostly her.
Saturday, April 23
"My big bro is taking a nap. Who wants to play Tuggy!"
"Hey, you gonna put my food dish down today or what??"
Sunday, April 24
Today's doggo update: Kona had a rough day. First, she got the zoomies and ran too close by Kimo, knowing this displeases him greatly. He tackled and bit her, hard enough to draw a yelp. Then she jumped up into Patty's lap but didn't stick the landing when she jumped off, landing on her side. Finally, she got the zoomies again and tore behind the couch, catching the lamp cord and pulling the lamp off the end table--luckily the lamp and light bulb didn't break. So I've blocked off both sides of the couch now. We'll see what our resident Meth Lab comes up with next!
Kimo is upstairs in bed with Patty and is happy. Why? Because Kona is downstairs in the kennel and he can get some sleep!
Monday, May 2
Kona has decided to not pee when I let her out. At least ten attempts over the past five days. With Patty, she pees just fine, so it's not something medical. Have tried different leash lengths, different locations, standing with her, leaving her alone, nothing works. I thought that she would whine if not let outside, but she went nearly ten hours several days ago. I think she's figured out a way to clone Kimo's bladder!

Baby girl in contemplation
Wednesday, May 4
Today's Doggo update: I already wrote about Kona's successful peeing this morning so no need to rehash that 🙂 One of her many talents includes close-up begging! She hasn't approached our old dog Sam's tendency to drool all over the carpet as he watched us eat, but tonight she got up on the couch and got her face about three inches from mine while I was eating a Fudge Pop! Kimo was sitting on the floor watching her and you could almost hear him thinking "Shit, I never thought of doing that!"
Thursday, May 5
I hooked Kimo and Kona up to this new leash and took them for a short walk. When they both pulled in the same direction, they were like a sled dog team! Maybe I should buy some roller blades and they can drag (literally) me around the neighborhood, A couple times one of them decided to walk behind me so this required a little adjustment, usually a quick 180 turn by me to get them reoriented. Overall they did pretty well for the first time. I thought Kona would be aggravating Kimo but they mostly left each other alone. We sat up at the patio for a few minutes and both doggos were VERY interested in Kimo's BFF (Ollie's) house! Like they both knew some dog was in there and were waiting for him to come out and play!
The leash seems durable and it didn't kink up at all (as advertised). They'll be on this thing quite a bit this summer so practice will hopefully make perfect.
It appears to be money well spent depending on how long this lasts.

Little Baby Kona is celebrating her first birthday today!
Monday, May 9
Kona made a move at Kimo's bone tonight while he was enjoying it, and he let go with a "BACK OFF, I'M SERIOUS THIS TIME!!!" growl. Impressive! Man, did she back off.
But she didn't totally give up. Ten minutes later he was laying down next to the couch, resting with the bone next to his head. She was up on the couch. First, she looked down at him. Then she hung her head over the edge of the couch. We could see this happening! Eventually she slowly slid off the couch, reached over and took his bone into her mouth. She then walked off to enjoy his/her/whoever bone on the other side of the living room.
Sneaky 'lil shit.
Saturday, May 21
Patty found a good slightly used Kong Wobbler at Goodwill yesterday. After a thorough cleaning and filling it with Kona's food, Kona basically walked around and sniffed it. I showed her how to knock it over and get the food out. Nothing. She watched Kimo, who is an expert at Kong Food Extraction. Nothing.
This morning? She did great, emptying the thing in about 10-15 minutes. Apparently the only motivation she needed was hunger!

Such a sweetie. I love Kimo dearly but Kona can really turn on the cute!
Kimo chimes in “Hey! Am i not cute as well?” He sure is!

Snuggle time! After which she fell asleep as i scratched her
Thursday, June 2
He loves lying on the bed in the summertime. I'll usually open the blinds so he can watch his domain outside. Here, though, he chose to just take a nap
Friday, June 3
Kimo's morning routine of jumping up on the bed, resting his head on my elbow and staring at me, has never grown old. It will never grow old. ❤️

Kimo working on his tan this morning
Friday, June 10
Today's doggo update: While Kimo is being his usual chill self, Kona isn't quite that way! Aside from the usual bugging Kimo to play with her several times a day, she.....
1) Broke loose from Patty's leash grip yesterday and dove under the townhouses' fence. Patty calling out to her didn't work, so Patty squeezed under the fence (luckily there is an opening there near our pine trees) and took possession of her leash back. What was Kona after? Rabbit!
2) Tonight up at the townhouse patio, Kona was just kicking back checking out every sound she heard when I saw one of our local resident woodchucks over by our friend's townhouse. It slowly walked toward Patty, Kona and me. I got up and went to confront it but it was in an area where there were no gaps in the fence big enough to allow it to escape! (The woodchucks seem to have made a home on the other side of the fence, which is slightly wooded) So, the woodchuck started walking toward me. Having never tangled with one, I wasn't in a hurry to find out what kind of damage those could do to a human, so I backed up rather quickly. The woodchuck saw its opening and ran around the patio, finally diving under the fence on the far side.
Kona? She made noises I've never heard from her before! It was part screech, part cry, part "I'm hungry, let's eat!". Patty's grip on her leash (after learning yesterday how quickly Kona can break free) kept her at bay and preventing her from an encounter which could have got ugly, assuming she could have caught this surprisingly quick "foe"
Sunday, June 19
Well, this is a new one. Scolding Kona this morning (she was being rammy and rammed into my knee), so Kimo scolded me! He's becoming very protective of his little sis
Me: Oh, are we scolding dad now??
Kimo: Row row rooooo!!!!
Me: Hey, we don't do that here!!
Kimo: ROW ROW ROOOO!!!!!!!
Guess he told me ❤️

Getting the DNA sample from Kona tonight was, to say the least, interesting. She fought it like crazy. She didn't fight having her mouth opened up but shook her entire body around once I started swabbing. Patty couldn't hold her still so she took the swab and I took our little Tasmanian Devil wannabe. I had little better luck,
When our vet called Kimo a Squrimy Wormy, it was obvious she hadn't yet met Kona! Hopefully we got enough of a saliva sample for Embark to do their thing. We're extremely curious to see what crazy breeds went into making her!
Wednesday, June 29
We just got an email from Embark. They weren't able to process Kona's DNA sample--most likely because we didn't swab long enough. A new one coming and a rethink of holding her still while Patty swabs the inside of her mouth is in order.
Sunday, July 3
Tonight Kona was sprawled out on the couch next to me, so I leaned over her head and started making this squeaking sound by pulling air in between my teeth. She started tapping her tail quickly and loudly on the couch. "Cool, she likes this!" I was thinking when she suddenly jerked her head up directly into my nose and upper lip. If you've ever been hit in the face, you know that throbbing feeling you get right after you get hit? Yeah, like that.
So now both dogs have head butted me. At least in Kimo's case, he hit me on the hardest part of my head.
Oh, and Kona thought it was great! She jumped off the couch and started running around, finally jumping on Kimo and initiating a mini-brawl.

Posing girl!
Monday, July 18
Took Kona down to Bark Ave this morning for a nail clipping. She's so good down there! No pulling or squirming (looking directly at Kimo) she just let the nice lady do her thing. Then took a nap in the back seat on the way home. She's quite the chill girl. Until she's not
Tuesday, July 19
I look at Kimo and lament about how "he's slowing down, remember when he was a puppy and tearing around the house?" And then he gets into a spirited play session with Kona and I think "Yeah, he can still bring it" ❤️
Wednesday, July 20
Kona is a smart, lovable shit. She knows that Kimo won't play with her and she's not allowed to annoy him when he's on the couch with me. But she HAS figured out something very useful (to her, at least). If she puts her front paws on the couch between us like she's preparing to jump up, he'll nearly always jump off the couch. Once on the carpet, she'll then bug him until he engages in play fighting.
Not that they're never okay being on the couch together. If I'm not on the couch, they'll sprawl out next to each other and nap. But it would appear there is a different set of rules when the Pack Leader is in his spot on the couch.
Monday, July 25
Today's doggo update: We have always known Kimo was quite the little escape artist. But Kona only needed about a half second of door opening tonight to show Kimo what real speed can do!
She was at the front door, being vigilant as always, checking out the various critters who like to appear under the townhouse fence--rabbits, squirrels and of course, groundhogs! She was intently staring at something so I went to check out what had cast such an apparent spell on her. It was a groundhog and looked to be caught in one of the traps! Yippee! I backed Kona off, opened the door and started across the yard so I could get a closer look. Turned out the groundhog was only in the entry to the cage and hadn't advanced far enough for the trap door to do its thing. It ran off under the fence, I opened the door to come back into the living room and ZOOOM!! out flew Kona. She crossed the yard and driveway in a flash and disappeared under the fence. I ran outside in hot pursuit (as much as a 64-year old barefoot male with bad knees can pursue). Kona came part way back under the fence, growling and then turned back around.
So. Patty opens the door and Kimo does this "Hey Kona! Wait for me!" and takes off out the door too. But he stopped before he got to the fence so Patty easily caught him. At this point Kona must have decided she wasn't catching the groundhog but hey! Her brother was outside! Let's go bug him! So she reappeared, bounced her way across the yard (she does this kind of bouncing thing when excited) and tried to jump on Kimo. But at least, we got them both back inside.
It was a scare, with Pluto the Pit Bull next door--I didn't know if he was outside or not but had visions of Kona wanting to play with him. Who knows, maybe they would have got along great? But with all the issues the neighborhood has had with Pluto getting loose, having Kona running around was the last thing we wanted.
Last night they both had pup cups, courtesy of the nice folks at Dairy Queen on Grand Avenue. Two dogs simultaneously devouring these can made quite the racket!
And now that I mentioned the "hot pursuit" thing, Buford T Justice comes to mind

10 years ago today we got our first look at "Harold"
Friday, July 29
Patty and I are eagerly awaiting the results from Embark telling us what breeds Kona is. The results are expected within 1-3 weeks. While I understand we're almost certainly going to be surprised by these results, my money is on a) Black Lab b) Greyhound and c) Whippet. Some Jack Terrier wouldn't surprise me, also.
Sunday, July 31
Wow. Really?? Kona's DNA results from Embark:
52.6% American Pit Bull Terrier
22.2% American Staffordshire Terrier
10.0% German Shorthaired Pointer
8.8% German Shepherd Dog
6.4% Great Dane
Thursday, August 4
Ten years ago today Kimo (the dog formerly known as Harold) walked through the back door, into our house and into our hearts. He's been enriching our lives ever since.
Friday, August 12
Kona saw a rabbit in our yard tonight and was literally punching the front door window with her paw trying to get out!
I scolded her.
Kimo scolded me. (He does this long, drawn out howl--it's funny as hell!)
Not the first time he's done this but apparently this is how he rolls.
Friday, August 26
Happy Dog Day from Kimo and Kona! Here they are participating in one of their favorite activities--napping!
Sunday, August 28
Doggo update: They're mostly leaving each other alone today, which I find interesting. Is it a sign they worked out the pecking order yesterday? I'm skeptical of this so am keeping a close eye on them to ensure we don't have a repeat of yesterday's melee. We just finished taking a nap--both dogs were on the bed and they ignored each other. Kimo came up on the bed last and was carefully picking out his spot. Despite it being a king sized bed, there isn't a ton of space left after two humans and a dog who likes to sprawl out are already on it!
I left for a while early this afternoon to go pick up some new insoles, and Kimo gave me a long howl followed by two short ones when I returned. It was kind of a scolding (for me leaving) followed by two exclamation points. Both dogs were pretty clingy with us last night. Kimo made with a generous licking. Kona doesn't lick much, but she is a world-class snuggler! She ended up sleeping for a while with her head on my thigh.
On an unrelated note, Kona had her first vocal dream a couple days ago while on the bed. Kimo got up and walked over, looking down at her like "Hey, you okay, sis?" Pretty cute.
Monday, August 29
Cutie! Such a little poser
Kona has been super snuggly with Patty all evening. Patty just went to bed, and Kona generally likes to stretch out next to her. Not tonight! She's on my soft fleece blanket which is nice but.....uhhhh....it's where I (maybe) will be sleeping later
Kimo, meantime, is happily crashed on his soft double padded bed.
Did I mention we spoil our doggos from time to time?
Wednesday, August 31
I just checked in downstairs to see what Kona was up to. She was on her back, curled around the back of the kennel, busily chewing one of the nails on a back leg. Guess she's good. She loved playing with me in the garage yesterday and didn't lose interest in the tennis ball (like Kimo does after 3-5 fetches!). Wearing her out a bit can only be good, and Kimo is in full agreement.
Thursday, September 1
Doggo update: They're playing again but it's more muted than in the past and it doesn't last as long. It appears that Kona is learning a boundary.
She's so easy to recall from the bedroom and into her kennel! It usually takes just two calls and then she runs down the stairs and straight into her kennel. No fussing, no delaying, no faking entry and then running the other way (yeah, I'm looking at you, Kimo!!). She's super good this way. She's been sleeping through the night totally silent since probably late March. Good girl!
They both lost their freaking minds this morning when Pluto, the Dog-Whose-Owner-Can't-Or-Won't-Control, came strolling through the area after (again) getting loose and running under the townhouse fence. This shit's going to come to a head--it's happening far too often. The owner needs to either a) train Pluto or b) relinquish Pluto to an owner who can/will control him. It's a ugly, bloody dog fight waiting to happen. I might need to contact Proctor police to see what can be done, if anything.
Sunday, September 4
Doggo update: Last night Kona started doing this jump forward/back/forward/back at Kimo, never getting less than six inches from him. He watched this for a bit and then raised his left paw up in the air. She took this as "Invitation to play accepted!" and off they went for a few minutes of fairly gentle (by their standards) play. This play has become much more controlled and tame lately.
After finding two spots where Kimo was a bit bloodied following their battle last weekend, I was surprised. She came out of it unscathed!
Well, not quite. Yesterday I found a small spot of stiff fur on her neck where he had bit her just hard enough to draw a little blood.
Patty is still a little freaked out by what happened. I'm more of the mind of "I think they came to an understanding but let's keep a close eye on them" They seem to be getting along far better this week and for that, I'm happy. Kona has stopped barging in when I'm giving Kimo scratches when on the couch and for that, I'm sure HE is happy.
Friday, September 16
Where’s my treat, hooman?
Sunday, September 18
Doggo update: Kimo has firmly established himself (for now) as the alpha. But when he mounts Kona (from the side, as I don't think he ever had any real experience with humping before getting snipped) and goes to town, she just looks at him like "Dude, WTF are you doing?". He has also become somewhat proficient with backing her off when he's not interested in playing. But if he wants to play and she doesn't approach? He gives her one of his patented howls, at which point she charges. So it appears each dog knows how to antagonize the other just a bit.
While taking a nap on the couch this afternoon, I felt breathing on my face and opened my eyes to find Kona about two inches away checking me out. What she did next was hilarious--she snuggled up next to me with only her upper body (back paws still on the floor!) and then proceeded to mash her head and neck against my face! Why? Damned if I knew. I think she wanted me to move over and give her more room to snuggle.
When she wants to get away from him, she jumps up onto Patty's chair. On the other hand, Kimo will jump up on the couch next to me. Each mostly understands that these are safe spaces for each dog. Mostly. Not always.
Thursday, September 22
My dogs have nearly always reacted strangely to me singing to them. From Taffy trying to bite my face while I sang REM's "Pop Song 89" to Kimo mauling me while I sang Foster The People's "Don't Stop", it's been interesting. So I just sang Kona The Offspring's "Pretty Fly For A White Guy" and she head butted me!! Luckily she has a small head
Kona came right up onto my lap this afternoon while I was in my home office chair! Put her head down on the arm rest and took a quick nap.

The Adventures of Kona, Part 1--She decided to enter the Let's Hurt Dad! Doggo Sweepstakes this week. It started when, on her 25-ft leash, she ran up and around the small pine tree. I followed her and attempted to reverse her direction to unwind the leash but it was caught up on small branches and turned out to be a real pain to untangle. Kona must have thought "Cool, dad's up here, let's get the zoomies!" So she ran around me quickly--twice. I pulled my right foot out of the resulting tangle, and she then ran off toward the house, tightening the leash around my left foot. Yeah, my leg flew forward and down I went! Luckily, on the fleshy part of my ass--and there is enough ass there--so I wasn't hurt. Just a bit embarrassed. Kona thought it was great fun!
I told her that her big brother had caused a five stitch cut on my eyebrow ten years ago so she'd have to try harder. Much, much harder
The Adventures of Kona--Part 2--I've been letting them both outside on the same 25-foot leash Kona tried to turn into a weapon on Wednesday because it's much easier to use than that damn short 6-ft leash. Kona went out on it today, did her business and then started zooming back and forth. Pain in the ass, to be sure, as I'm trying to walk over to her poop and bag it up. So I walked her over to the garage and hooked her up to the bike rack on the back of my car.
I return to the yard and start bagging up her business. I hear this cracking sound and look up to see Kona running towards me, dragging her leash behind her! What the hell? She had run off and the force of hitting the end of the leash had snapped the metal base of the lead in two. So, it's ruined.
Not to worry. We had a new 30-ft heavy duty leash ready to go. The packaging states it's for dogs of 50-100 lbs. We'll see but the metal lead part is certainly more substantial than the one Kona just broke!

Kimo up close
Tuesday, October 25
Not long after playing with my buddy Todd and having a spirited play session with Kimo, Kona was zonked out on my lap
Friday, November 11
Kimo and Kona got their nails trimmed this morning. Kimo, per usual, did his Tasmanian Devil impersonation. The lady clipping his nails went "C'mon Kimo, we've been doing this for ten years!"
Yep. And so has he
Kona, meantime, was a perfect girl, just standing there and wagging her tail during the clipping. Not a squirm, not a sound. Kimo should have taken notes!

Kona The Ham. Kimo was too focused on his bone
Sunday, December 11
I recall saying that Kona didn't like the snow much last winter but this winter she's been having a blast in it! Even more so than Kimo. She loves jumping over snow piles and running amok, so this should be fun, especially on the 25' leash.
Friday, December 16
After contemplating the big snow bank, Kona eventually she scaled it and went up the hill to find her special “spot”
Tuesday, December 20
Such a beautiful sleeping pose! She really likes using my DVD cases as a pillow
This is a new one! They have never tried to put their head on my leg at the same time and on the same leg! No idea what they wanted,

Friday, December 23
I just heard Kimo's signature "WOOO WOOO WOOO WOOOOOOO!!!" from downstairs, indicating it's dinner time! ❤️
Anybody who thinks Kimo is an innocent victim of Kona's adolescent antics didn't see him run by, pull the blanket off her and happily run around the dining room table with it.
Saturday, December 31
I think Kimo told Kona about the time he made me do a five-stitch header on the garage floor. She must have thought this was a fun idea!
Not the garage floor and not a header. Pulled off my feet on a snowy driveway, landing squarely on my chest, Kona running off dragging the 30-ft leash behind her.
I was surprised because she's gotten pretty good at gauging where the end of her leash is and stopping just short. Not this time! There was a squirrel on top of the fence she wanted to check out!
Painful rib cage, but at least my head was safe
